Now I've passed 1500 miles of driving sensibly, I decided to let the car rev a bit higher and see just how this compares to my previous car which was a 2ltr diesel with plenty of torque.

on a clear road, dry and safe with no traffic:jester:, leaving in 4th and seeing what happened passed the usual 2800 rpm.....holy moly the thing just wants to let rip! Without realising it, I was touching 90 and still had a couple of gears to use. Yes I was braking the limit on the motorway but only because I had no idea it would get there so quickly. Yes I miss the torque of the TDI but the petrol isn't that far behind on paper for 0 to 60 and same for the top speed. I'm currently using £30 less per month on fuel!!

All I need now is for the dreaded actuator rod rattle to get fixed and I will be a seriously happy camper.

Same on my 8p 1.4TFSI, what I find is that when I pull the trigger the engine goes a further notch as it reaches 80mph (when I am on European road) always seems like the turbo kicks in again, have always put this down to a deliberate design feature for our European colleagues who can cruise at 130kmh or just over 80mph in English money.

Apart from my turbo rattle this is the best engine in any car I've had. The difference in performance between this and my previous 2.0tdi is negligible, and I'm averaging 41mpg long term, with some trips getting high 50s. Putting it into dynamic on twisty roads affixes a permanent grin to my face :D

I'd have to second that, its a great engine that can offer performance AND fuel economy! Its quite 'diesel' like in its power delivery, in that it seems to provide all its power in the mid rev range (presumably when the turbo is on boost).

It still has plenty of pull in 6th (manual) for motorway overtaking.

I took off quickly from the lights the other day, had to reach for second before I knew it but man did I have a smile on my face!

I was hoping for a thread like this, because I'm looking forward to seeing the difference in power from my old car, and wondered how other people have found it.

I used to have a Seat Ibiza 1.9 TDI with 100bhp, and thought that felt pretty quick. From what you guys are saying about going from a 2.0 TDI to a 1.4 litre petrol engine on what I'm assuming is a 122ps, I'm really interested to see how my 1.4 litre 140ps performs!

In fact, my test drive was in the 122ps, and once I found dynamic mode on the MMI I found myself thinking "crikey, this is quicker than mine!".

This is nice to hear. I test drove a 1.6 diesel and I thought that had reasonable power so I was hoping the 1.4TFSI I have ordered had some poke. My current car is an Astra SRI 1.8 with 140bhp and that has loads of go and I was predicting that I will be missing the power a little. Perhaps not!
 
Yes I can see this being an interersting thread in the next days and weeks as I am going the other way from the 122ps 1.4TFSI petrol to the 2.0TDI 150ps diesel and expecting the extra power to be very noticable particularly when the car is fully loaded.

To date my 1.4TFSI is the best car/engine combination I have ever driven and expecting my latest purchase to top that.


I had a A4 s line 2.0 170PS as a hire car for a week last year and was very impressed (but felt handling was perhaps a bit heavy/sluggish) and expect my new A3 to match it for performance as the power/weight ratios are very similar and the book performance figures are very similar.

Actually I should say mine is the 140 CoD!
 
When I ordered my A3 the 140 1.4 wasn't available to order. I did try a Golf with the new engine which seemed a tad unrefined - but i'm starting to put that down to the fact it was brand new and probably not run-in based on the fact that everyone else here rates them highly. When I come to renew this one I'll definitely test drive the COD, but for now the 122 is ticking all the boxes for cost, performance and economy :)

When I get my hands on my new 8V it will be my 3rd 1.4T and in my books its the best little petrol engine I have owned or driven. A great little engine.
Reminds me of my Cairn Terrier Smudge............Only small but packs a good punch and wont ever give up.

It's now back to standard 122 PS due to being PX against my next one, but it was chipped by the daughters boyfriend for 18 months who works for a Vauxhall Performance Garage, I think this took it to 135 or 140 but to be honest there was not a great deal of difference apart from it hung on at low revs a tad better, fuel was no different from what the DIS was telling me. Just love the smoothness of the 1.4 and economy is always around 42 MPG running 70-75 on the motorways and gentle a roads at 40-50 push this up to around 50 MPG. I only ever run them on V power as they just seem happier with it compared to standard fuel.

I give the 1.4 TFSI 10 out of 10 as a good all rounder.

Can't believe the difference in performance from my 10 plate Sport 1.4 TSFI I traded in for my new S Line 1.4 TFSI I picked up today. (Sorry I still have a massive grin on my face!!) It's like night and day. The new car is so much more nippier and really justifies my decision not to order the higher engine size. I was torn over going for the same size engine or spending a few thousand more for the higher engine......seems I made the right choice for once.

Is your 1.4TFSI a 122PS or 140PS?
 
The 122 PS engines run the turbo absolutely flat out from the factory. I can get about 135bhp from them when remapped but the turbo spins at a ridiculous speed. Hybrid turbo and you open up a while new would of 200bhp plus performance :)

Okay, having had a 100bhp 1.9 TDI Seat Ibiza prior to my 140ps 1.4 TFSI, I can confirm that the difference in power feels significant! Even at a decent motorway speed, in dynamic mode the engine still really wants to pull away, despite it lacking the torque that my old Diesel engine used to have.

I'm thoroughly impressed with the lack of noise coming from under the bonnet too. :)

Karl can you let us know what sort of rpm you're on when cruising at say 70mph (or even a little higher if conditions allow ;-) I have ordered the COD just wondered how busy its going to get up against my diesel A6 at higher speeds
 
At 75mph steady, I was plodding along at just below 2,000rpm I believe?

Thats really good for a petrol, Can't wait to get my C.O.D.
Is nuts but is the one thing on the car I had to select a bit blind, just based on performance stats and reviews.
drove the 2ltr. Diesel and that lovely and was quick enough me and C.O.D. Is a slightly quicker so should be fine.
but based on what you are all saying, I feel more confident i have made a good choice as the petrol engines seam particularly good on the A3.
 
I'll pop out for a quick spin at lunch and give you a precise figure, as I'm not 100% sure on the one I gave you. :)

I'm not sure about that.
1.4 COD manual in 6th at 70mph: ~2500rpm I think. Still better than my previous car which only had 5 ratios so would be over 3000rpm.

I think you are right, my CoD runs somewhere between 2000-3000rpm at motorway speeds

You're going to love it, I brought it 'blind' but tested the 150ps Diesel and 122ps petrol. The petrol was surprisingly good so I hoped the 140 would only be better. To be fair the 140 does feel similar to the 122 but you really notice a step in fuel economy when the cylinder deactivation kicks in. The 150 diesel does have more pull and a throaty engine sound under throttle. It was very good but then we mostly do short journeys so it didn't warrant a diesel and the higher purchase price.

Cool, not heard any negative comments on the C.O.D. So far, even seams to avoid the linkage rattle that can effect some 1.4 122ps A3's For some reason. I am coming from a Honda CRZ with 124 Bhp and 0-60 of 9.1 sec's, plus although sport back is bigger car, is also slightly lighter than CRZ because of batteries and electric motor i suppose. So is bound to be a bit of an improvement in performance on current car.

I was in a local garage yesterday sorting out a work vehical and the customer if front of me was having a few problems that linked back to lots of short jouneys only in a VW diesel where the partical burn off the diesel engine does now and again doesn't get a chance to work properly, the garage owner said they had come across a few problems that where caused by this. I'm not that familiar with it, but i am guessing Audi have sorted this on there diesels as not seen an problems on here about it, but have read a few comments on new owners worrying that car gets hot and noisy as happens, when they don't know what it's doing, so obviously works.

No being serious, it's a pain that Audi have been so slow to sort out what seams to me to be a simple thing to correct.
Hope they sort them all quickly for everyone, they should chuck in a free service or something for all the inconvenience of canceled appointments and waiting etc.
