Which model to go for..........

Hi all!

I am on several other forums but this is my first Audi one and thought was a good place to start for some sensible advice, so all help welcome!

I am unsure which TDi to go for......I know I want an Avant Quattro and was unsure whether to go for the 2.0 or 3.0?! I will soon be in the market to get back to the Audi badge and can't wait!

What are the pros and cons for the two engines, economy, power, scope for tuning etc etc?

I have posted this in the B8 section too, not sure which to go for?!

Good engine, good economy, good power, good scope for tuning.
S-line too else you'll keep seeing s-lines and it will make you hate life.

I have the 2.0 Tdi 170 fwd (saloon) great car tbh but I would go 3.0 Tdi quattro, that's what Im moving into next when the time comes.

Sounds like the 3.0 is the one to go for then! Does anyone know much about the reliability of the auto box?
 
Gearboxes?.....Luck of the draw....without wishing to get into a ruck over this one.....Audi doesn't do reliable automatic boxes.....but there's Forum members who swear by them.....and there's others who swear at them!

I was afraid someone would come and burst my bubble over that one!

Don't suppose there are any particular models to avoid?
 
Depressing reading but I guess there is the same problems with any model.......is the 3.0 A4 available in a manual?
 
Not in the B7's..... I understood the autoboxes in the latest model A4's are much improved.....as I said before there are many Forum members who haven't had issues....and I drive a manuals so am the wrong bloke to be giving advice......heard too many horror stories about autoboxes. I have always stayed away from them.

I always thought the auto box in the b7 3.0 tdi quattro was solid. Well, mine has been!
gballs, I can recommend the 3.0 tdi as a good car, I love it.

Are you running a standard motor or a remapped version? J
 
Completely standard. I keep meaning to get it remapped, but then I spend my money elsewhere!
 
I only drive it at weekends, if I drove it everyday then I'd have to get it mapped. But saying that, it's pretty quick as standard!
 
I always wanted the 3.0tdi 233bhp version manual saloon in black and in the 3 months I was looking I only found 1 and it was over priced for my budget think it was about £11,000 with 80,000 miles and the guy wouldn't budge on his price either even a month later he was still holding out this was only a few months ago. Not sure how common the 3.0tdi manual avants are but I settled for the 2.0tdi 170 in the end and I'm happy with it.

Do you need a TDI? How about the 2.0 T FSI? It's won't have the torque the 3.0TDI has but I've had mine for 3 1/2 years with no issues. Does 30mpg all the time which I think is OK for what it is. It does use oil as is well known but not 1 litre/1000 miles. More like 1 litre/3000 miles on mine.
 
I'm going to settle this once and for all with a video of my 3.0TDI manual...enjoy! :nyah:

Definately 3.0tdi over the 2.0 if economy isn't your primary concern. But a 4wd, 275bhp (remapped), that will seat 5 and has a decent sized boot, whilst still getting 35mpg is pretty damn good!

So far I've had no problems with my auto box, I thought it was the CVT that had issues?
 
If I wanted power with economy then the 3.0 diesel would be my weapon of choice, but if I was choosing reliability and potential lower running costs & repairs over the year, I'd go for petrol and if I was really mental a S4....especially if you are only using it as a weekend toy.....if you doing 15,000miles plus a year you need to consider a diesel no question imho....However, at the end of the day it's all down to baggin; yourself a good, reliable motor with plenty of history.... whichever engine type you choose.

Right ho, think I'll keep looking for a manual then!! Would have liked an auto but sounds like a whole bunch of trouble and expense!
 
The B7 is quite possibly THE WORST car Audi have put on the road.
If you must have one get a 1.9tdi or a 3.0 tdi.
Avoid the 2.0tdi units like one would avoid the plague !
Never buy a car with a CVT gearbox.
Oh and don't eat when the sun goes down................................

I think PaulB7 maybe a bit too extreme with his views....but not that far off! Since owning my B7 and doing a bit of homework post ownership....it's clear the early B7's have their fair share of issues. Pump duse diesel engines ( think they were on early B7's)...CVT gearboxes...petrol engine and diesel engine oil pump failures, injector meltdowns, ignition pack meltdowns, oil thirst in petrol engines, BLB engine issues....er and my personal favourite, rust issues under wheel arches, back hatch and rear wheel arch bumpers......apart from that they are great! hahaha Seriously, there as car brands out there with just as many if not more faults than the B7's...I have heard Audi fans/owners say that after the B5/B6 Audi have relied on their reputation....which again you can argue till the cows come home. Example: My BGB engine doesn't touch oil while other BGB owners drink it like two strokes....you can be really lucky or you can buy a pile of sh&t!! at the end of the day you need to take everything in balance learn from others who made mistakes and do your homework...so you are right to ask questions. Personally, if I came across another B7 Avant petrol in rustfree good nick I would probably go for it. I have owned mine for 13
months done nearly 32,000km's.....and the smiles per mile far outway just about any other car I have owned....

What's all this, my comments EXTREME, surely not................................LOL
Back being serious, I am SERIOUS about my comments . Largely because my 2.0 tdi was bought as an Audi approved car with 40,000 miles on the clock and excluding servicing costs, tyres, brakes etc she is now at just under 90,000 miles and in the five years I have owned the car it has needed a new oil pump/balance shaft conversion, a/c compressor, egr valve and recently a new turbo. The car was purchased for £10,500 and the a/c compressor was replaced under warranty. The other repairs have cost me circa £3250.
I have owned Audis for nearly thirty years and taken all of them ( all previously petrol units) past 130,000 .NONE have been as expensive a car to run as this one. The 2.0 tdi in my eyes is a DOG and this will be my last Audi for sure. If I was to buy one again it would have been a 1.9tdi if only because this engine IS bullet proof and because for me the costs of running a 3.0tdi would have been just too much.
Good luck car buyers with whatever your choice of transport be, but Audis response on the oil pump/ balance shaft issues has left a long lasting bad taste in my mouth.............................mmmmmmmmmmmmm where are the mints ?

Thanks to you all for your comments and views, regardless of your stance. I would rather know exactly what I'm looking at before I start so the I don't simply go pouring money down a bottomless hole!!

Do you happen to know if these issues are confined to the B7 A4 or do they extend to the A6 aswell? The 3.0 Le Mans A6 looks nice.....or do I need to have a word with myself?!

Honestly. Don't panic. :) Honest John is great in that it lists everything that might ever go wrong. However, as has been pointed out, it's luck. There must be loads of people who have cars with no issues but the law of the internet is the problems rise to the top. Honestly, you don't get many posts that say "my car has been absolutely fine, thanks for asking". People come to the forums to enjoy the banter, talk about modding and to ask for help. You could always start a poll on here? How about "In the last 12 months my car has been a) fine b) minor work required c) major work required d) I'm still in therapy and can't talk about it" ? :)
 
Quattro auto is less problematic that front wheel drive. Doesn't need the oil changing every 40k either. Well this is from my experience as an employee of Audi then a VAG specialist
 
Hi chrisaquat, why is the quattro less problematic I wonder?! If you are looking from a professional point of view.....what should I look for? I love the look of the B7 over the B8 and I know its a lottery and really dunno what to buy now!
 
I'd go for a 3.0 tdi Quattro. For some reason the Quattro uses a different box than the normal multitronic
 
Cheers for that, still unsure over the auto or manual.....? I'd love a lazy auto just scared about the horror stories and unpredictability :wtf:
 
We loved our 06 3.0tdi Quattro manual.. Only getting rid of it now we've got an S5 cab. Stunning car to drive, holds the road, power AND economy from the weasel.. Don't think you'll regret it!

in fact ours is available!
