Hi all,

I’m due to pick up my new S4 in next 7-10 days. Before hand I’m looking to change to winter tyres when I get it as it’s all country lanes where I live and it’s a death trap. I think even Colin McRae would have struggled around here! Anyone get any recommendations for tyres to fit 19” 8.5j v spoke? Ideally I don’t want to pay £300 per tyre as they’ll only be on for a few months plus the next set of tyres when I change my summers will be Pirelli ps4’s so don’t want spend crazy. Cheers :)

Are you sure it's not cheaper to buy OE 18' wheels from people "upgrading" and fit cheaper winters, saving on the fitting twice a year ? This is normally a way for winters to be totally cost neutral IME.

Not sure if they clear the calipers though.

Winter tyres in that size are expensive for anything like a decent tyre. Assuming they are 255/ 35/19 they are anything from £150 a tyre and up for anything half decent.

You could fit some cheaper Chinese winter tyres but these tend to be pretty poor.

700 fitted is an excellent price.

Where was that?

So for winters the tyre size needs to be 255/35/19?

I’m sure my summers are 245/35/19 but I can’t find any winters that size.

Popped into my local Kwikshit earlier and they said they can’t get any winters to fit my S4!

If I order a set on line what can I expect to pay for fitting?

I paid £10 a corner fitted and balanced on my Freelander, Oponeo will even deliver direct to your tyre fitter.

Pirelli at £200 seem to be the correct speed rating, I have these but in 18” on painted rims to protect the diamond finish, road grit and salt is bad for them, personally I’d be happy with Nokian but the insurance police may take a dim view.

Hmm, just checked and the Nokian are actually higher speed than the Pirelli which are Audi OEM

Any suggestions on storing the summer tyres so they don’t mis-shape etc when re-fitting?

Well it's been some years since I was last here. Still running Audis and just bought a nearly new S4 Avant. Looking at audi.de configurator, they sell their winter tyre options on 18" rims. Either 7.5J with 225/45s or 8.0J with 245/40s. I've ordered a set of Conti Winter Contacts as I've had good experience of them and now looking for some 18" 8J rims. Audi UK don't sell the German "winter aluminium gussraders" and have suggested going aftermarket since their own 18" cost a fortune.

Other than that, as suggested, looking for a deal from someone upgrading to 19".

Any recommendation for plain looking aftermarkets?

Interesting - I'd try to source some 18' from an upgrader first although you would need to cross reference with the winter wheels on audi.de and get the right one as one 18' will clear the calipers (obviously) but another may not, depending on spoke design / dish.
