185 (8X) Brake Discs

Time for some new ones all round on my 2012 Black Edition and can't seem to find much info on them.

Seems that the rears are 232mm which is fine as they are. Are the fronts 288mm as standard? Putting my reg into various websites brings up different options - 312mm being the largest. I assume these slightly bigger discs will fit my car behind 18 inch wheels, but is there really any point in larger discs? The pads and calipers will be the same size, so what difference would they make to the braking produced?

I've a 2013 Black Edition (8X1BCG) on 18" rotors and as you say found problems sourcing brake discs (the EBC ones were both wrong and were returned) so went OEM.

OEM for mine were:
A6R0615301B 312mm o/dia. front brake disc
A8X0698151 brake pad (front)
1K0615269 anti-rattle springs for front brakes

A1J0615601P 233mm o/dia. rear brake disc
A1K0698451 brake pad (rear)

Oh, and I coated the discs with POR15 and they've stayed rust free.

Cheers. I'll have to get some POR15 Clear and coat the discs before I put them on.

I assumed you couldn't put anything on the disc surface itself, turns out I was wrong. You can even paint them!

I'll have to measure my discs too. I assumed 288mm was standard on them.

Oh and I'll also go for OEM looking discs. Not fussed with grooved/drilled and all that lark. The way I see it, they have less disc surface material in contact with the pads so don't see the appeal for everyday driving.

EuroCarParts have a bank holiday sale on until tomorrow with 50% off all brake parts, so can get Brembo front+rear discs and rear pads for about £100 which is a no brainer at that price.

Not decided which front pads to go for yet. EBC Green/Yellow/Red, Tarox, Mintex, Ferodo all under consideration until I do some more reading.

My calipers are already painted green btw. I guess I could always give them a quick brush with the POR15 while I have them off the hubs.

No! DO NOT paint the friction surfaces. In fact, do not get POR15 onto the friction surfaces at all as it goes off bullet hard. I've seen a set of rear pads stripped on an RS3 with excessive POR15 application. Just sayin...

Yours looks great. I've gone for ride improvement - as we're a lot older - so the ride height of our A1 is a little higher than yours.

We find the STD OEM brake disc and brake pads just fine on the A1 for 'relatively' fast road use between home and hospital (don't get overtaken much...) and some shopping in between. For fun I have other Audi machinery so zero worries. Our 185bhp A1 does exactly what we bought it for, and more.

I almost got mine in your colour too.

Seriously, I bought mine over the phone from Blackburn Audi. I was unable to go and see it, or drive it, for 3-weeks. When I felt able we just drove up to Blackburn in the TT, collected the A1, drove it back and set about putting it right, darn Audi dealers. It did have 12-months warranty, however, though I haven't had to use that. New brakes and tyres just about sorted it.

Gonna double, double check the size of my fronts later, Nick; off with the wheel and out with the measuring stick, just can't see why yours would be any different...

Made a jig to check/double-check mine, Nick, and they ARE 312mm dia:

Do the same with yours, Nick; make a cardboard jig and check before handing £s over.

Goes easily through the 5-spokes - top to bottom - like so:

Note: these are 40 profile tyres (225/40/18) my own 'added-ride-comfort' choice...

Mine are on 225/35/18. I'd like to go up to 40 but I'm not sure I'll get away with no rubbing on full lock because of it being lowered. 40 profile adds an extra 11.25mm to the tyre thickness on 225s.

Information: OEM from Stafford Audi (May 2016) for my A1 were £297 for 4 x discs and pad sets; from EBC (but were wrong both front and rear ) were £398

I still think the OEM braking stuff (discs and pads) for the A1 is OK, for road use; you sure wouldn't get me saying that for the RS3, tsk...

I measured my discs with a bit of cardboard (cheers!). They are indeed 230/288 so Daz was right.

So I ordered rear discs/pads, and front discs. Brembo all round. Came to £88 with free same day delivery. Ordered at 10am, delivered at 12pm. Outstanding price and service! Just got to decide which front pads I want and order them.

Today I also ordered some NGK Platinum spark plugs (the exact same ones Audi use as OEM) for £30 delivered from www.sparkplugs.co.uk They are due now as well so will have a go at fitting those myself too.

Next job after fitting the brakes and plugs at the weekend, price up a Timing Belt change. Not looking forward to that one! There's an independent Audi specialist in Loughborough (not far from where I work in Coalville) so I'll see what they say. May as well get the water pump and rollers all done at the same time too while they're at it.

Ours is 39k but had a new engine at 12k due to high oil consumption - as did most but uses zero oil now - so not into belt change just yet. New plugs last year, however. GREAT car, love it! Great FUN too.

I got lucky that EuroCarParts had 50% off brakes just when I needed them. Nice when things work out that way!

Just gone past 60k on mine. I bought it in June 2016 and it's not had the belt done yet so better get it sorted sooner rather than later.

My oil light has come on twice since I bought it so not much topping up has been needed.

Interesting. I've been running Redstuff ceramics (front and rear) on our RS3 for 7-years now and like 'em lots; but for sure they didn't suit our TT (with similar/same single pot caliper on the front) and 1500 miles on I changed back to OEM (in fact my original pads) and a huge improvement - and is why I've stayed OEM on our A1. I'll be interested to hear your results. Make sure and bed 'em in properly as it can make a huge difference to the cold/initial bite.

Thought I'd give an update now I've had the new brakes on for a few weeks.

The ceramic front pads (ATE) I'm very happy with. They were quite noisy driving away from the garage, but I went for a 20 minute spirited drive down the carriageway and country lanes. After they were nice and warm and a couple of medium/heavy stops they suddenly went quiet as they bedded into the new discs. After that they've been almost silent, even when cold first thing in the morning. And they give instant bite too. Very impressed. Though they should be decent for £75 a set!! Stopping power is good too, though with all new discs/pads it's hard to judge how much better as they are bound to feel better from new.
