Hi,

So I've been driving my Audi for a few months fine now but for the last few weeks or so, there has been some problems popping up.

I'm pretty sure it might relate to the stickied post concerning the turbo overboost.

Basically accelerating quite hard just causes the car to just completely shut down. I can step on the pedal all the way down and won't pick up any speed. Up to third gear its fine but as soon as you're in fourth to sixth gear and I accelerate hard, it can shut down at any time. Switching the car off and on fixes the problem but only a temporary fix really...

The engine management light is currently showing and when hooked up to a computer, it also mentions a problem with the turbo.

I've read up a few threads with similar problems and for the last few days, the turbo has been making the whirring noise same as to the other threads.

I'm just wondering is the solution to the problem the stickied post?

How much around would this cost to fix?

Thanks.

Your car is going into Limp Mode.
Probably need a new/reconditioned turbo.
Im guessing its a diesel?

I paid £850 for a reconditioned turbo, fitted with new boost pipes.
Loads of info on here in more detail, do a search...

Yeah it certainly feels like it's going into limp mode and yes its a diesel.

Well I guess I'll try and look for a new/used turbo on the bay or something.

Edit: Just curious but is it all I need, other than the turbo itself, an oil feed pipe to the turbo?

If you get a recon turbo professionally fitted they will fit a new oil feed pipe, otherwise the turbo warranty will be void.

If it's a BKD engine with 70 - 80k on the clock then it's 99% just the turbo. Mine cost £700 fitted 18 months ago.

I was just going to get it fitted by the local garage and attempting to source my own parts possibly.

I'm actually only using the car as a run around nowadays, so the warranty on the turbo isn't a problem and yeah it's the BKD engine but it managed 140k on the clock before this started to happen.

It's been up the garage and he also says it's the turbo and that it'll cost around £800-£900 fitted for a new turbo and around £350-£450 for a used one?

What would you recommend?

Also, thanks for the help.

A reconditioned turbo will be perfectly ok for your purposes. Presumably you don't kick hell out of it all the time ?!!!

£350 - £450 is about the right price to buy a recon. turbo but the fitted price including new oil feed pipe, oil etc. will be around the £700 mark.

You've done very well with 140k on the original !!

The variable vanes in your turbo are sticking (more than likely due to carbon buildup) and you are either getting too much or not enough boost pressure. This gives the boost pressure positive / negative deviation fault code, triggering the limp mode. I've seen people clear out the turbos with oven cleaner (google it) and the best part is you don't have to remove the inlet manifold !!. If it was my car I'd give it a go before spending money on a new turbo....
