170 TDI rough idle, smoke etc help needed !

I am having the same problems with my brd 170. This seems to be a common problem on this engine that many mechanics/tuning specialists don't know about.

I have had the egr replaced, reconditioned turbo, DPF, injector seals, rocker cover, glow plugs and many sensors but none of these have helped.

Took the car to a new mechanic today who assured me that the cam timing was out. After hearing him out for 15 minutes I am sure he knows what he's doing and won't rip me off for parts I don't need (like all the previous mechanics did, including Audi main dealers). Will update you all on Tuesday, wish me luck.

I have heard of people getting the timing adjusted but its not what audis settings say it needs to be or something.

Good luck if its a success.

Adjusting the cam timing doesn't need any parts and if you know what you are doing doesn't take that long so can't imagine it's going to be expensive.
You really can't alter the timing that far from normal as you get issues with starting going one way and low down torque going the other.

Karl.

What was the outcome on this kammy? I get this lumpy idle when cold and blue/white smoke. Ive had dpf and egr delete and its still the same. Egr restrictor was in before

Same here on my 170 BRD. Got a restrictor on the EGR and going to give it a clean. Car smells inside of fumes if sat idling which isn't great!

I get the smell when sat on idle cold. Im glad it not just me that gets it

i also have a restrictor fitted, cleaned my egr and manifold last summer but still had crappy idle when cold but the restrictor made a massive difference and hardly does it at all now. i also get the fumes in the car when sat too long but that is also dependent which way the wind blows. wish i had the money to just do away with the egr and dpf and see if that helps with the idle.

My egr has been deleted and i still get it. So f*** knows

this a frustrating issue and clearly one that affects these engines on a regular basis,im surprised that over the years there has not been a definitive answer for the problem

I took the car to Autocrew in Smethwick. Had the cam timing set and their electrician also advised on a full remap. The reason for this he said was the last garage that deleted my dpf and egr didn't do it properly. Apparently he had to send the ecu readings to their head office in Germany and they then advised him on how to remap it.

Was this the adjustments on top of the injectors under the rocker on the cam?
