I've got a 115pd A4, i went and got a service kit from caf co (or what ever they call them selves these days) and the oil they gave me was 10w40 semi synth...

I questioned it at the time but he checked on the system and said it was right.

I would have thought 5w30 fully synth would have been the recommended though? . . Also, the old boy is on 250k now, i was thinking i might be better off using 5w40 anyway, what's your thoughts and experiences people?

PD engines should use an oil with VW 505.01 approval. They're usually fully-synthetic, 5w40 or 5w30, and are often labelled as "PD oil"

507.00 supercedes 505.01 so you can use that as well as mentioned.

Personally on a higher mileage engine, i'd be sticking to the thicker oil (5w40), the reason for this is even if the engine doesnt consume the 30weight, its thinner, which means less oil pressure, especially on a high mileage motor where all the clearances are getting a bit sloppy.

5w30 507.00 is thinner than 5w40 505.01 but by a negligible tiny amount.

At 100°C 507.00 is 12 mm2/s and
505.01 is 13 mm2 /s .

And 1 mm2/s is equal to the thickness of water.

That will vary from brand to brand though, but sure point taken, modern 40's are usually towards the thin end of the 40 scale, and 30s are towards the thick end of the 30 scale.

The 40 should still end up thicker, and the 505.01 oils are typically cheaper, as the 507 oils are more expensive due to being specialised for DPF use.

It doesn't vary as its part of its spec qualification , from Comline to Quantum 507.00 is still 12 mm2/s @ 100°C .

If you look about there is hardly any difference between the two costs .

My last lot of 507.00 cost me £19 for 5L.

The only real difference is 505.01 5w40 has been labled a medium quality oil and 507.00 5w30 a high quality oil by a German labritory.
