Had a fight with a curb. Lost.
Bumper and intercooler ruined

My mate sent me a pic of the offending curb.
No scale there but rest assured that's a high curb. I'm going to ram that curb up west lancs councils sphincter

I was just parking it up, really narrow road so was going 2 up onto the curb, I was looking end on and plus the intense rain had 0 visibility and didn't see this block sticking 18ft out of the ground. Must have hit it at 1mph, I was literally crawling, can't believe the damage from such a slow impact.

I limped it to my dads, left it on his drive, Mrs got her car and I drowned my sorrows with lashings of whiskey and she drove me home when I'd lost my mind.

I recon the council will just tell you to jog on just because your car is lowered.

You'd have a better chance saying you tripped on it and went head first into your bumper but it'll be hard to pass that one off with a name like "superkarl" hehe

Just to cover my own *** so you all don't think I'm a moron, the intercooler is as high as it can physically be

And I don't have a splitter anymore either so front clearance is pretty good.

On the plus side, I needed to make solid boost pipes anyway, and, I get to buy a new cooler with 2.5" outlets which weren't available when I did my welly cooler, so that means and even cleaner install.

Just a shame because Daves blood sweat and tears went into that FMIC

my sister successfully got her alloy wheel repaired by the council due to a pot hole.
when apparently the council were said to be taking no responsibility for them so give it a go. don't matter if your car is lowered if the kerb is high and a danger. looking at it it is!!. lots of cars will be lower than yours oem.
try it!

I had 6 months discussing this with a council legal representative and got nothing apart from the road finally repaired, I should've called soul

No updates in years?
It's laying dormant on my dads drive and the replacement rad is sat in the living room.
Weather and time dependant. But il try and do it soon. New boost pipes, rad, and possibly intercooler, going to pressure test the current one in the bath. It got twisted slightly in the collision and its bar and plate type so don't think it will be too air tight anymore

i think you should just ship the whole car to me so i can fix it and drive it.

Rad fitted yet?
Months ago.

Current updates are:

Car runs reasonably well, some niggles include:
Boost behaviour has a mind of its own, more thrashing, higher it will boost.
Bit of a whine coming from somewhere after a thrash, at low rpm, rises and falls with revs.
Drivers side window reg cable is snapped, I ordered a reg, wrong side, sending the wrong one back, and the right one has just landed.
Exhaust leak seems to be getting a little worse, very slightly audible when hot.
New intercooler fits like a pig due to the mounting lugs being about as straight as Fred.
Need to boost leak test the new intercooler and solid boost pipe.

Need to put money into the cars appearance and general well being - paint work, body work, headlights, badges all round, strip out carpet and shampoo it etc etc
But I also need to think about getting a proper manifold, downpipe, wastegate, valves, valve springs.

Gearbox died tonight.
Stuck in 3rd gear when changing from 3rd to 4th.
Cables a.ok so I assume it's the selector fork.

Going to Barcelona tomorrow so **** it.

Il take the box out when I get back and might try buying and fitting the steel forks

A lot of it about... I really need to crack on building my box as the changes have started feeling 'different' recently... its only a matter of time :(

<tuffty/>

:( it seems this is the next "whens it going to finally let go" part for our cars Karl. Gearboxes are fairly cheap, every cloud and that

Unlucky dude I know how it feels felt it twice lol...I'm gonna go for getting a box refurbed diff and all the parts that darkside do for strengthening and hope that will cover me

Sorry to hear that mate, exactly the same way I lost one of mine. That was the shift fork snapped :(

I've just gone through this thread @superkarl and wow! good job on the DIY of it all. just goes to show if you have the patience, tools and resources it can all be done.

best thing is that turbo can make that much power! does it have more in it or is that maxed out? or is it limited at the top because of short runners?

Hope you get the gearbox sorted soon too!

Cheers.

It has really tested my patience this car with unexpected failings, but it's very rewarding being able to enjoy it, while it lasts.

My setup does very well to make the power it does, but the turbo has more to offer with some hardware changes such as manifold, wastegate, housings etc.

I'm currently limited by the log manifold and internal wastegate. I also have stock valvetrain so that is needed to take it further imo, but it comfortably revs to 7-7.2k as it is and all it needs.

Going to start on the gearbox following a little break to Croatia, although I do have other jobs pending including the ST and some home DIY I'm tackling, amongst work related things aswell, so it's slow progress on all fronts.

talk to me about the spool - similar to stock? do you think that would shift much if you were to upgrade to tubular mani?

i thought you upgraded exhaust valves? i've got a AGU head that i'll work on getting stripped and then ned to get pressure tested - thinking upgrade exhaust valve side as i've read usually the inlet's are fine...

this GTRS setup is doing my head in, yet there's lots of potential with the hardware on the car, and i think something similar to this would be better suited for street type driving where i like to scoot about

No not similar to stock at all, especially with a large port head. It's pretty docile below 3k, not much boost at all and little torque. I get full boost at about 3.3k.

I'm not actually sure if a tubular manifold would improve it at all, especially as the housing is changed, it will probably be laggier. I'm happy how it is now so need to minimise that.

I have a spare small port that I may port slightly and put the valvetrain in that, interested to see how that changes things. It's still stock displacement so small port might be the best option for me on a 'little big turbo'

still - it sounds like with that onset it's at a very usable point in the rev range for on road driving without having to get up to 80km/p hr before you're on boost

Turbos don't care what speed you're doing. Only revs. just select the right gear

What exhaust mani did you use @superkarl ? Looks stock-ish with the turbo & charge pipe location (couldn't find it going through the history)
