Hey guys

I had a coilpack go on me a few weeks ago and just before it went the car was feeling a little hesitant, but since the coilpack was changed, only did the one by RAC roadside, it was a genuine replacement and it was only the one that was changed, as all of them are all fairly new anyway, the car seems to be 'missing' a beat.

It seems to happen in 4th, 5th and 6th, i mainly do motorway miles so can often floor it in a higher gear to overtake, but it just feels as if its not a smooth power delivery, its more bumpy...if you know what i mean:think:

I have had the car on VAGCOM a couple of times and no faults were found at all....

Its a 2002 S3 210bhp AMK if that helps at all.

Any ideas???
 
on vagcom you want to log misfires and see whats occuring
 
Just out of interest Nilz what mileage has yours got on it now, S3 missing a beat and starting issues seem to be cropping up quite a bit recently
 
i think the S3's are weather dependent lol, all S3's are going pear shaped at the moment as the good weather is disappearing lol
 
its just because there getting old i think, mine has recently been lossing boost and runing rough when cold changed the ufo pcv valve and the little valve in the crankcase breather pipe today now its happy again.. i have literally changed every single hose valve sensor on mine now so i hope it will last another 8 odd years again lol... iam such a perfectionist any little problem and it gets fixed so i have ended up with new every thing but the engine basically.
 
Just hit over 100k on it, i dont think its the coil packs as they are all recent and ive not had a chance to check the maf or boost leaks, what would be the best way of checking these??

Also how do you check for misfires on VAGCOM??

Not really up to scratch on it, so any help would be great.

Good question. i would also like to no how to log possbile missfires. Also is there a way with Vagcom to check if your coil packs are on there way out or is it just a case of bitting the bullet when you got a missfire, buying new plugs and if that dont cure it replace the coil packs?

mine is also a bit jumpy, think mine is down to boost/vacuum as misfire count came back ok. it is dam irretating.

to log misfire, you have to open channel 15 + 16 on vagcom, then its just a counter. Just go for a drive and see what it come back with
 
if you go into vagcom under blocks, then select the number block you wish to log

Just a quick question before i do a proper run. ive opened blocks 15 and 16 and its showing Voltage and RPM and Knock Reg. is that right?

sounds like the wrong block then lol. Use some initiative and scroll through the blocks until it reads misfire count
 
OK an update on this, found out it was a boost leak as the pipes under the inlet manifold were split, so since changing them, I went out for a test drive to see if my baby was back, but no it was even worse!!

Did a scan and it came up as a misfire on Cylinder 2, so i presumed it was a coilpack, so got a brand new one from Audi, changed it there, came out and still the same!!

So got to work and called the RAC as the EML came on again, they scanned it and it didnt give any fault codes, only thing he said was it could be the plugs, so changed them last night and again, its still the same.

Drove into work today and half way in the EML came on again solid this time, no flashing, so I called the RAC again and they had a good look, tried to find any leaks, took the air filter pipe off and covered it up and it stalled as expected, so no air coming in from anywhere else.

The fault code that came up was P0171 lean bank 1, which he said could be an oxygen sensor thats causing this, could this be the issue??

When im driving now, basically under normal driving the boost is fine and the car runs very smooth, however under load, the car really struggles as if its hitting a limiter of some sort.

Its just getting annoying and frustrating now, as cant seem to work out what it is, I also disconnected the MAF and tried a test run with this off and it was still the same.

What I have noticed though is that the Pipes connected to the 'puck' seem to have collapsed and feel really squidgy, would this have anything to do with it???

Any help much appreciated as im really frustrated with this now :(

Unlikely to be related to those breather hoses to be fair, especially if they aren't split.

Have you looked at the coil wiring? I would consider stripping back a little of the coil pack loom and looking inside for split wires. This seems to be a common issue.

Hi mate, checked the wiring that all seems to be ok as well, also the coils dont seem to be blowing, its jsu as if its misfiring, holding back, as i say, its as if its hitting some sort of limiter.
 
I had a similar problem on my old A3 TS, turns out the ignition amplifier was toasted, unsure whether the S3 has one or not though. :unsure:

No, they don't. The Final Output Stage Amplifier was only a feature on the AGU engine, after that they went to pencil coils.

Hmmm, have you got access to VAGCOM/VCDS?

Logs of blocks 002 (Airflow), 020 (Timing Pull), 032 (Fuel trims, long and short term, just a shot of the values in there), 115 (Requested vs Actual boost), and 118 (Actual boost and N75 duty cycle) would be very useful in this instance.
 
I havent currently, but will have over the weekend, can have a look at these Welly and see what we are looking for.

What exactly are you looking for from what you have asked, so I have an idea too.

Yeah, no problem.

002 - Looking for peak airflow figures. What they are, make sure they are sequential numbers, and make sure the numbers aren't low. Low figures normally indicate a poorly MAF.

020 - Timing pull. Pretty obvious this one, looking for figures on the 4 blocks that aren't too high. The limit of acceptable on this 6s.

032 - First number/% is short term trim. Second number/% is long term trim. Both should be within +/- 5% tolerances under normal use. Up to +/-10% is acceptable. Over 10% and it's bad.

115 - Requested vs Actual boost in MBars. You have to remove 1000 MB (atmospheric pressure) from the figure to get the actual boost on both boost values. Left hand one is the requested, right hand the actual. The second should follow the first. If it is substantially higher or lower, then that's bad.

118 - Similar to the above with the pressure reading on this block, but 118 just shows actual pressure. It also show N75 duty cycle. Gives a good idea of how hard the turbo is being worked to produce the requested pressure, and can also indicative of issues with boost control.

Cheers dude, that has totally confuzzled me, but im sure we will get there.

I did disconnect the MAF and it still ran exactly the same, so not sure if that will show on the log or not??

It will show in the fault codes - DON'T clear the codes until you've got the values from block 032. Clearing the fault codes clears that data as well.
 
Hey an update, did a scan and the following came up:

The MAF one cleared afterwards as it only came up as was disconnected to test before and after.

I havent had a chance to check the other things as yet.

Went to see Speedy Steve over the weekend, checked the MAF and that looked ok, checked all the pipes and they seemed ok as well, no leaking round the pipes or the injectors, although we are going to do a pressure test to see if there is any leaks anywhere, but at the mo it looks like it maybe the lambda sensor that has gone, so I may get one of these tomorrow and have a go at swapping that over the weekend.

Any more ideas, do you think we are on the right path to get this sorted.....I just want it sorted now :(

Woohoo!!!

Back on the road and all in full working order now.

Went to see Speedy Steve (The LEGEND!!!) and swapped the lambda, then did a pressure test, and immediately we could hear a massive leak...it was the fuel regulator pipe under the manifold, it had literally perished and snapped off, hence the lack of power and fuel economy, changed the pipe, cleared the codes and all looks good so far, went for a blast and it pulled like a train.

So im smiling again now :)

Thanks again to Steve for his help and assistance in sorting the car out in the FREEZING cold weather.
