Just bought a 2014 audi a3 sline 1.8tfsi manual last month in a private sale and unfortunatly had a slight coolant leak, had to have the waterpump, thermostat, union and belt done at a cost of £675 at a local garage, does the price sound about right ? The thermostat was around £260 and waterpump was around £80 with vat added on both, which i think is very expensive, does this sound about the right price along with 4.5 hours labour ? Thanks

Depends on location for labour rates. May be towards the higher end for an Indy but seems in the right ball park including parts.

I guess the damage was more than just a cracked thermostat housing - not sure of price for the whole unit so can’t comment on that.

Was the water pump replacement due to part failure or precautionary (as it’s a fair bit of work to get to the thermostat anyway)

    What belt did they replace?

There have been multiple revisions to the thermostat housing part as it’s a common point of failure - ensure you have the latest version.

It’s one of the few weaknesses on the EA888 Gen 3 engine but the revised thermostat housing is a better design.

Sorry you had this so soon after purchase.

I contacted audi and they where exactly the same price as i paid for parts so in assuming i have the latest revised parts as had to wait around a week for parts on back order, i think my garage used TPS for the parts as they are geuine. Guy at audi said thermostat was expensive as its a whole unit. Im not sure what belt was changed but mechanic said he would always change the belt while doing the waterpump so let him do his thing. The coolant was going down very slighty and had heard of the problem online so just wanted to get it checked out, i could see the dried up coolant on the parts that where removed, the leak wasnt too bad but would have probs got worse over time the car was on 30k miles so quite low for a 2014 model

Sounds like cambelt. They always recommend changing both together. Recommendation for cambelt is 50K miles.
When I asked the dealer last year what it would cost to do that, plus service and mot he said about £1K. So yours sounds about right.

Brilliant thanks, i dont feel as bad now about paying that much to get it fixed, hopefully that should last a good few years without anymore leaks

...but the 1.8 uses a timing chain not a cambelt so must be some auxiliary belt or something.

If it’s the same as the 2.0 then I think the water pump is belt driven just not by the cambelt or cam chain.

The 1.8tfsi is chain drivin water pump is under intake manifold runs on a small belt that's attached to the balance shaft not to bad of a job 675 seems expensive to me

My thermostat housing on its own was quoted at £790 from Audi! Fortunately it was under warranty!

Four years ago the thermostat failed on my two year old 1.8TFSI. Fortunately under warranty as the cost then was £680, so your quoted price would seem about right.

The thermostat and water pump comes as a unit you change the full part its a plastic housing full unit is £200 so rest is labour surpose audi hourly rates about 4 to 5 hours labour
