Hey guys, looking at trading my Golf GT TDI in for an A3 1.8TFSI, just wondering if anyone knows the costs of running one of these and if they are high?

Thanks

Ajay

Well, when standard on mixed driving mostly dual carriageways i would see 35-40, 40 being really grandad driving and it was a struggle.

Since mapped max i can get is around 35 on similar drives and in general it sits on 30-32, Rarely does it fall under 28 and thats if im absolutely booting it.

TBH it wont match a TDI for MPG its a good buy if you want more umph and prefer a petrol but if you do alot of city driving start and stop go for another diesel or get the larger 2.0T unit if you want pure petrol fun.

i have a 1.8tfsi, i get around 230 miles out of £40 if that helps. insurance costs me about £500 with ncp but I have been banned. service around £170 ish with audi

Yep 34-36 here too on 30 mile trip each way to work which is fairly mixed. Not really took it on a big run yet so can't comment on that.

ive got one here and im gonna tell you that its good on fuel.
i get 34mpg and below around town.
26mpg stuck in traffic.
at 70mph im only doing less than 2500rpm.
i have had 51.9mpg at 60mph (see pics below).
road tax is £165 per anum.
ive had it up to 141mph on a german private track here.
i do alot of motorway driving and its not so far off diesel
considering the disel prices.
but at 185 pound of torque, its no match for diesel torque levels.
go an test drive one.

Best I've got on mine is 45.2mpg from Bournemouth to London (130miles) and I do that every two weeks or so. I find that I get a better mpg without cruise control and just use my foot accuracy.

I see around 27 - 35 around town.

My overall after 4400miles is 29.7mpg

When I fill up before going to London on V-Power (£65/£70) I do 270ish miles on round trip with a few small trips in between. I usually return with a 1/4 tank. I then hit red about 330/340miles. Wouldn't say I boot it everywhere but I have a play now and again.

Hope that helps.

Its amazing how much better the 1.8 is than the 2.0, i have taken mine on a few long runs and no matter how slow or how smooth i drove i could not get it over 40mpg, i had an a2 tdi and got that up to 71mpg once but my 2.0 tfsi won't do over 40! oh well thats what you expect for 200hp i suppose

Chris

when i switch my map on i dont get more than 43mpg, and thats granny shifting.
but with the map off i was able to get 51.9mpg.
i recon i can get close to 480 on a full tankor maybe more.

Ah cheers guys, some good views on the engine here! I'll definitely go look at the one im after on thursday.. Diesels dont make much sense to me as i only drive around town so only seen an average of 32-35mpg that with the higher prices just makes it silly.

remaps only seems to improve fuel economy on diesels.
if you opt for petrol and want a remap, make sure it is a switchable map.
Interesting you say that as i was looking at a remap as a way to improve both performance and economy :(

Mileage is a serious matter!!! I own a FSI 1.6 and a friend of mine owns a same one, his ones is reg. 2005 with 91K mileage and mine reg. 2004 about 70~71k mileage along with FSH from Audi, and just by staring the engine you can easily tell that my engine sounds much smoother, drivers smoother, and I get over 43mpg, but he does around 34~35mpg...

The other day he wanted px and £500 on top... :) LOL
Of course I would save much more than 500 within 6 months time...

So it's not about the reg, it's all about the GENUINE mileage whether it has FSH with either dealer or Audi itself...

Hope it helps...

I think that's quite a lot of mileage considering the reg. !?!

Also, what's the no. of former keepers!?!

I recon not more than 2 previous owners, mine had 1 former keeper from NEW!

Hope this helps too... :)

it depends on the price, number of owners and how the car has been looked after.
if the car has had regular oil changes with a decent quality oil then the engine should be ok
and another plus side is tthat it uses a timing chain unlike other cars so there are no timing
belts to change.
with 80k miles i would hover around £6000k mark. mabe more if its an s-line.
the SE SPEC to me is not worth it coz the ride is too soft and the front seats look lame or sh!t.

80,000 miles with FSH, 2007 model.. is the milage anything to worry about?

Well the one i am going to see is an SE with the Sport package upgrade.. Priced at £5995, they said if my car lives up to the condition i've mentioned to them then they will give me £4800 (2004 GT TDI with 2008 GT Sport facelift, 70k FSH etc) The new car has only had ONE owner from new and have been told it's in good condition both inside and out.

you guys all drive far too slowly!! my missus 1.8t only does about 30mpg on a good day when I'm driving it!!

is your VW GOLF a MK 5 or a MK 4.??
if it is a MK 5 then you are more or less
down grading in terms of power and torque.
and more also they are getting a better deal from you
if you car is a MK 5 Golf, while you wont be getting a
significant deal.

I know my cars worth more if i sold it privately but i hate the hassle of selling privately. Mines a 140BHP MK5 which is remapped to around 180BHP. The upgrade adds sports seats, 3 spoke sterring wheel, sports suspension, 17inch alloys

The sport seats should look like these in the pics below.

your remapped Golf would probably make around 300 pound foot of torque versus the Audi's 185.
try to haggle a bit and let us know the outcome.
by the way what colour is it?

Can i ask you guys what servicing costs are like? and how often do they need servicing? i've never had a petrol car before so not so sure, all i know is its more regular compared to Diesels.

Btw its red Shady Ninja

servicing can be done on long life oil or every 10k miles depending on how many miles you do every year.
my car is on long life oil which according to the on board computer is 17k miles.[
serivicing costs are are no different to diesels.
what you pay for a service is a bit of a lottery as it
depends on the dealership you use.
some charge more, some charge less and some do offers to cars over 3 years.

Going to see the Audi today, just wondering before i travel the 60 miles or so, ate the 1.8TFSI engines strong engines to go for even with 80,000 miles on? As some of you have these engines, what are your views?

they are good engines mate.
more advanced than the old 1.8 20vt.
if the car has high miles, the price paid has
to reflect it.
do an HPI check and try to match the vin numbers
and engine numbers and cross reference them with
the log book.
ONE RULE OF THUMB.
inspect the car with your head and not your heart.
make sure the stereo is turned off so you can pay better
attention to and rattles and shakes,
inspect all the panels and gaps and make sure they line up.
make sure you start the engine from cold and try to leave it on for
and extended period of time.
take the car for an extended road test.
see if the tryres are all the same brand or four different brands on one car.
dont feel intimidated or hushed into making a deal.
i wish you good luck.

Left the car that i went to view, it just didnt seem right.. there was evidence of paintwork thats been carried out on the front wing which put me off and the milage was 87,000 not the 80,000 i'de been told! Also the car was bearing plates and a tax disk holder with the MB motor group logo which is a company close to where i live in Bradford, i wouldn't trust them with anything so that was a major turn off too as the car was only a one owner car its somehow ended up in the hands of MB at some stage with i didn't like!

The search must continue although i think i do want a red car for definite now. Thanks for the help

i sorry to hear about that but persevere.
as a buyer you are king and various cars will come up
every now and then.
try to extend your budjet a bit more and look for a
sport or even an s-line.

sorry to resurrect this thread
has anyone had chain failures o their 1.8tfsi yet?
