1.8t Cabrio K04 turbo upgrade (not the usual rubbish ones)

Any updates on this?
No updates really on this on the build up to christmas. The stage 1 clutch and flywheel from Awesome Gti has been ordered but is out of stock so lead time to get it shipped from the US is 3-4weeks. once this arrives it will be down south west car tech to get a dyno run done and the results posted here for everyone. No point going for a run when the clutch is slipping.

Before doing this Marinescu..have you tried contacting BBT (Beach Buggy Turbos) to see what he can do for you? He's a specialist in Hybrid Turbos..Full of knowledge and from what ive seen, good on price.

The exchange rates make it difficult for most outside the UK to consider BBT's turbos. He doesn't offer a 260hp turbo for £400. That is IF the Mamba holds up as well as his.

@t.oldey: also waiting for updates, really interested in a Mamba.

Agreed, but the exchange rates wont be that much. Plus..in my opinion, its worth investing a bit more in someone who has been hybrid turbo'ing for years and knows what he is doing.

Exciting times for whichever route you take..

hi im interested in this as well plug and play turbo ?

Hopefully, T.oldey will come back to you in due course but this isnt really a plug and play turbo.

If you literally replaced old turbo like for like, im sure you would get a few more horses but to really get the potential out of it, upgraded piping is whats needed and straight through exhaust etc.

Hi all. Sorry for the lack of replies didn't realise there was any replies on here.

Just to update everyone on what's going on but I sold the car before I managed to fit the s4 clutch and dyno it. I managed to gather enough funds to get a car that ive wanted for a while now (Porsche Cayman) so the audi had to make way for it.

When I sold the car the turbo was completely fine and no issues what so ever. The new owner has since fitted the new s4 clutch and to my knowledge hasn't had any problems either. I see it every now and then at car shows still.

Apologise for the hype up then how its all gone flat since I sold the car. I would still stand by my first thoughts on Mamba and the quality of the turbo. And by the turbine and housing sizes in the images I posted earlier in the conversation, you can get a feel for an improvement over the OEM.

And to answer an earlier question it was completely plug and play and comes with gaskets and braided oil hose to replace the oem one that always gets clogged up over time.

Nice mate, I will quite likely get this setup because of this thread.

Get a couple of final pics of the cab before you sold it on here, and at least one of the Cayman :friendly wink:

Hi Tom,

Was going to update all about your situation :p

I can say, the Cayman is lovelyyyy and a good 'replacement' for the cabbie.

To be honest I can say if I ever get a 1.8t Audi again I would happily buy this setup again if that helps with anyone decision etc...

Audi when I sold it:

I have now purchased this turbo package from eBay! I will gladly commandeer this thread from Tom to keep the results/review coming.

The turbo will be going in my stock 02 AVJ A4 saloon. I've spent the last year or so preparing the engine for more power. Using only genuine parts I've replaced oil pick up tube, oil pump, sump baffle, oil pump chain & tensioner, cam cover gasket, cam tensioner & half moon gaskets, vacuum pump, one way vacuum valve, oil filter housing elbow, cam belt and tensioner, water pump, aux belt, spark plugs and had coil packs tested by Audi on a recall - all ok.

Is there a sure fire way of knowing whether your cam chain tensioner is in good working order? And can anyone think of anything else that I should consider before upping the power?

The plan is to go and get a rolling road readout at a local RR before I do anything to see if the car is managing anywhere near the 150bhp stated in the logbook. That will also give a good bookmark to compare any further figures to. Hopefully I'll strike a deal with the RR to take the car straight back for another run with the turbo bolted on, no other supporting mods whatsoever and see what it produces.

Anyway, my difficulties for now are that DPD have emailed me asking for £62 for import tax and customs, is this my responsibility?

And much as was the case for t.oldey, time and money constraints will most likely mean slow progress so please be patient

If you didn't pay the seller import taxes, then it's your responsibility.

Indeed as Jimmy says with regards to import Tax.

Great news Pal..Like that you simply went and bought it..no ifs no buts haha.

Do keep us all in the loop as this is VERY interesting.

Ive been doing a little research myself into this turbo manufacture/hybrid set up.. They seem to have established a decent rep as a lot of guys in the far east as well as across the pond are very happy with their kits.

Cant unfortunately help you with any of the technical stuff but im certain that a straight swop with no mod work will yield some extra ponies. Of course with all supporting mods, you are looking at over 100BHP gain over your stock set up!

Cheers lads I've begrudgingly paid up now, delivery set for next Thursday which I think is very quick!

Haha it does appear a bit gung-ho doesn't it but like yourself I've been watching the reviews and the company build a little reputation.

The plan will be in stages with hopefully a rolling road readout between each one. Something along these lines

Rolling Road

Optional step if very poor result: terraclean engine.

Add turbo
RR

Add FMIC & tubular ex mani
RR and live mapping

Etc

Will probably be months between each step while I recover financially haha

I had a frankenturbo F21 kit on my B5 totally changed it in the lower rev range was a very quick spooling turbo had 3" decat, non res milltek, vr6 maf, saab red injectors, icm delete, 4pin bolt down coils and was running 10-11psi WG actuator pressure with N75 disconnected on stock ecu as the plan was to get it mapped and it was showing calculated maf readings of 196hp on a 180hp tune, aragorn has recently had his B5 TQS mapped by rick at unicorn in stockport with a similar sized BBT hybrid and ME7 conversion (DBW) and it made 276hp and 295 ft lb.

Man I love reading this stuff!

Bradderz - I think you're one of the first ive heard of using a Frankenturbo for this. Awesome as its a rare thing.

Northampton - Im excited for you. Fingers crossed all will be as planned.

Ive sold the frankenturbo to someone on SRS (should of kept it longer and put it on the B6) hes getting his TQS ready for mapping with WMI i think, my B5 is now getting T25 ATP manifold, GTX2867R-MSPEC turbo and ME7 conversion on a built 058 2008cc stroker hoping for figures in the 400hp range.

Been porting the manifold today and got one port boxed off today ....

Any updates?
If you're not using it do you want to sell it?

I have bought a Frankenturbo F21.
Should I use the FT exhaust manifold or the ported BEX?
Has anyone tried moving the cat under the car to improve flow?

Any updates on this turbo combo and results? I am at a cross roads to ether rebuild my k03 with the k04 hybrid kit, or rebuild the k04 (my other turbo)with the upgraded billet wheel or just rebuild the k04 to oem specs. I was hoping to get the details from this thread before I make the final decision.

I haven't really stuck to the original plan at all, but I did fit the turbo a few weekends ago and all went to plan. See my build thread here
http://www.audi-sport.net/xf/threads/northampton-ofns-project-thread.255626/page-4#post-2996544

As for results, i'm still on the standard map with original 270c injectors for now. I'd acquired some BFV injectors and booked a remap for next week but i've cancelled due to a whole load of clutch slip. I took it easy for the first 500 miles but I've started giving the turbo something to think about recently. Initially the engine management was quite restrictive but it seems to be getting quicker. I know there's an element of adaptability in our cars maps but could it really be adding fuel to compensate? Anyway, it feels quicker.

I guess the next few steps are clutch, 3" stainless downpipe (damaged flex during turbo fitting and now it's spittting) and then live remap with printout

Any questions, fire away.

How has this turbo worked out? I'm looking for a replacement for the Chinese k04 I stuck on.

Been running the turbo on stock tune and injectors for quite a while now. Albeit with the BEX secondary intercooler, enlarged silicone TIP, panel filter and 2.0T coil packs.

I believe this is very much a plug and play turbo however (obviously) for maximum gains I'd say you're looking at the following non exhaustive list:
Healthy engine
Bigger brakes
Upgraded clutch 228-240mm (possibly S/RS4) as T.Oldey said
Aftermarket panel filter
TSMIC's or FMIC
3" MAF (possibly S3/VR6)
Enlarged TIP
2.5"<+ decat (as a minimum, preferably full de-restrictive system)
2.0T coil packs
Gapped spark plugs
And depending on engine code, and not to be fitted before mapping day, injectors. I've got a set of BAM's waiting to go on..

I've got most of the above hardware in place. Will hopefully get a clutch in the next few months and then I can start thinking about rr mappers

Apologies for the slow progress but this is all expensive stuff

Nice to see Dude! Cant wait for the mapping session.

Im going to pull my finger out, purchase this turbo when I have money and get it mapped. Have all of the above.

@fanta Did you buy a chinese k04-015? If so, from where and how is it performing?

A mate is running a re balanced 'Max Speeding rods' k04-015 chineseturbo (£100 new) and mentions its really good!

I wont be going this route but for the money, that's impressive!

I have recently had this ko4 mamba hybrid fitted along with forged rods and exhaust turbo back miltek 3inch tip and 550cc bosh injectors
After spending about 4-5 hours custom mapping and fixing one of my inter-coolers which blew up no lift shifting.
I have to say this turbo is amazing spools really quick and keeps boost all the way up the rev range im running 1.5 bar no dyno chart yet but im fighting torque steer in an s3 8l feels fast thanks to Chris cheers bud

Hi Sam,

Great to hear mate. But the Mamba Hybrid for the S3 8l is indeed different. The hotside is larger as well as the pipe work on a transverse being a lot shorter hence easier to extract more power. That's why I wont get anywhere near even 300hp.

Great going though as the turbo is wicked in my opinion.

Do get a dyno graph but im guessing your running 300bhp+ ? (im only at around 240 with my Hybrid)

Can anyone confirm whether the mamba turbo inlet requires a 46mm of 50mm or even larger TIP?

The TTE280 made 300ps on an AEB and that requires a custom 58mm TIP
