Hi guys,

I have just had to top up the oil again after 1000 miles (1 litre exactly), my mechanic says this is fine and it is noted in the owners manual (which I don't have), is this correct as i am going to have to top up every 1000 miles (12 times a year plus oil changes?)

The oil pump, pick up pipes etc have been replaced 5000 miles ago (by previous owner via audi main dealer) and i have had the pick up pipes checked by my mechanic (who formally worked for VW)

Any body put my mind at rest?

Thanks

It's on the high side, but within what I understand the acceptable usage to be - that said, my 2.0 petrol with 105k on it only uses 1 ltr in 3,000. Hope this helps, Mike.

I'd be checking the the boost pipes for blockages. Any blue smoke on start up or boost? Any oil in the tail pipes? Could be turbo seals, I personally wouldn't be happy with that sort of oil usage. My last 1.8t didn't use a drop between servicing, and I'm hoping my new onw won't either.

some audis use it some dont
this cab i have now dont use a drop
but the old B7 used around a 1tr every 5 to 6 k.

my old 2001 s3 used to use a litre around every 1000 miles and when i mentioned it to the audi specialists i use for my servicing they said that it was quite normal for the 1.8t engines to use that amount of oil especially as i was mainly doing short runs

my golf 1.8t aum started using lots of oil....on inspection (after a long time of repeated topping up) found the crap plastic dip stick tube had cracked and assuming that had let oil out.

Bought the car at 100k and it never used oil between services, from around 120k (remapped for some time) it started using oil and i was honestly getting worried...turned out to be the above and car is now on 133k and returned to not using oil.

guess it depends on engine and they are all a little different....worth checking tube though.

my old s3 51 plate never used oil either......and my 1.8t avant 190 is not going through any so far in 1k miles.....

That's about the max limit for oil consumption, my wife's a3 1.8tq never used any, and her 190 s line q uses no oil, my 2.8 30v uses loads! back in the day when i was working in the network i remember a lot of customers asking about high oil consumption and it varied so much from engine to engine, a lot has to do with where the car is being driven how it was driven form new. Personally the longlife oil audi suggest imo is like water and ****e, try something a little thicker like 5w40 i have used Millers oils XFS in both of the 1.8t's and it's not used any, Quantum oils as sold by audi do seem burn off a bit whereas Millers don't, tried this over a good few years and different cars.

Book says max oil consumption is 1 litre per 1000km.hmmmmmmmmmm
