So about a month ago, my 85kW 1.6 TDI with 29k miles started producing horrible knocking noises until clutch is pressed. Once you press the clutch, the sound would go away.

Dealership diagnosed it as a failing DMF, they replaced DMF and I was happy all until today... the horrible noise is back.

What kind of DMF does Audi put into their cars anyway if they go bad again after only 1000 or so miles? It's not like I don't know how to drive, I have been driving for a bit more than 10 years and in those 10 years I've had 1 DMF failure only (with car that had well over 180k miles on the clock), all up until the new A3 which is incredibly disapointing.

I will attach the pictures of my old DMF as sent to me by the dealership as I feel there is something else killing my DMFs potentially. Any ideas?

Dmf are all bad and might as well be made of chocolate. It’s not unique to audi/vag.
I’ve had one go at 100k and another go at 20k. Even seen them go at under 10k.
Usual response you will get from audi or dealership is you are riding the clutch etc and don’t know how to drive.
I’m surprised you got one under warranty as I got turned down on a 2 year old car so traded the car in to audi.

I went over their heads and contacted Audi Deutschland directly from my corporate Daimler email. They caved in because they saw the Daimler thing and they don't want the competition to hear things. :D

Anyway, a quick update in case anyone ever encounters similar problem. I have noticed that I get a clunk sound from the gearbox area when I change from 1st to 2nd gear. The sound is there for 2nd to 3rd also but a lot quieter, possibly this happens in other gears but I can not hear it.
The noise can only be heard when windows are down and surroundings are quiet. Best heard in between buildings due to echo.

The car is back with Audi, they said they will open the gearbox and try to pinpoint the issue. The rattling which sounds like DMF is also there, but there is a slight possibility that the gearbox has suffered some kind of damage thus all the horrible noises.

Will update as I get new information from Audi.

Clunking sound could be worn gearbox mount or engine mount.
