So I've read a few times on the recent threads that the 1.4 petrol is being discontinued. Does anyone know the reasons for this? I was debating buying a used one soon and now I'm concerned that it's not been around that long and must be unreliable, underpowered or something for Audi to axe it. I tend to keep my cars for 10+ years so really don't want to be stuck with something that Audi considered not worth continuing.

Replaced due to new car emission laws by the 1.5 iirc

It's being replaced by a 150ps 2.0 TFSI unit, due to WLTP emission testing.

The 1.4 is a good engine and refined. It isn't being replaced because of any issues other than Audi wishing to simplify it's engine range because of the new testing regime..

Do we know how much heavier the 150 bhp 2.0 will be than the 1.4?

I would think the actual engine, if its a EA888 gen3, about the same weight as any other 2.0l The actual kerbweight difference of what I have found is about 30kg between the 1.4 and the 2.0 A4 with similar specs, with the latter being the heavier. However there still could be variations between model specs but it is difficult to tell as we do not know any details of the actual engine yet.
For instance, the 190 version of the 2.0 has four additional injectors, whereas the 252 doesn't. Neither does the 1.4. The mass of the flywheel could be different, so many things...

I have had an A3 Saloon 1.4TFSI since September 2014 (awaiting a A4 Avant BE of same engine). This engine is suberb and I have no hesistation in recommending it as a used car. Certainly not underpowered but the MPG is not great - as I average about 36 mpg on mixed driving (not many motorways so town driving biased) but have done 55 mpg on motorways. Cheers.

I’ve just driven in my friend’s A4 B9 1.4 and I was surprised how nippy it was. You wouldn’t think it was a 1.4 under the bonnet. Differences I noticed was it was a little bit more noisier (engine revs) and top end revs start to lose pulling power (**** at explaining). Apart from that, my 2.0 drive very similar. One other thing I found is that the engine seemed to be working harder when driving normally. Whereas mine sounds like it’s just ticking over. Or it could be all in my head
Best thing to do is test drive.

Have you checked the WLTP ratings for your model? How well does this translate to real world?

Is the 1.4 still available? Had a marketing email from an Audi dealer with deals on new a A4 on PCP and the small print said offer was for 1.4 S-Line ordered and delivered before the end of this year. How does that fit in with WLTP and all that?

I doubt if 1.4 can be ordered for a factory build, this is why those who ordered 1.4's are finding that they've been swopped to a 2.0l. The only 1.4's that might be available would be those build before August...

That's what I would have thought but how can they be registered if not WLTP compliant? Isn't that why the 150 2.0 is being introduced?

Cars could be sold that are built before the september wltp deadline but there is some issue with that in the uk and I'm not sure if our government has allowed for this 'grace period' yet.
