I live in Scotland and have had uniroyal rainsport 3's fitted at £60 a corner for 18's in February. Not had a problem with them at all!
They are definitely a lot more premium that what the price suggests.
I previously had sport contact 3's on the front. Great tyre but wore quickly.
Also have you had a proper laser alignment done? That could be a possible factor in the tyre wear if it's not correct :) . No tread left after 3.5k does seem excessive!
I have Uniroyal Rainsport 3's on my FWD. I had rainsport 2's on my old car too. I find them very good value for money at £60 a corner for 225/40/18! Very good in both wet and dry! Had them since Feb and noticed pretty much zero wear on them after about 3k.
I've recently fitted Sachs OEM shocks all round on standard sport springs and it's a perfectly comfortable ride. I opted for sachs over bilstein as I fitted b5 perches too which won't fit to the bilsteins. I'll be opting for Eibach pro eventually too!
I believe some people fit (don't know if it comes standard too) springed hinges to auto open the saloon boot. There is a thread somewhere about this I'm sure
