Can't comment on your vcds codes, but the symptoms sound like what I had with my maf sensor playing up. I took it out and sprayed it with neat ipa, and left it to dry. Cleaned out my filter and airbox, and now it's been fine again for a couple of months so far.

That's some beading porn there. And some serious BMW orange peel! It'd be good to see you wet sand all that out and polish up to a nice mirror finish. If you you're going to map the diesel I'd go for quattro, but like you say there's no rush so make sure you get exactly what you want.
