No the grip is attached to the bottom of the camera and supplies it with power - this was a battery pack in a shoulder sling with a coiled cable up to the flash itself to provide more power. Similar concept to the (extortionately expensive) Canon CP-E4.
Ah yeah I've already got one of those funnily enough - was actually on about an external battery pack he was using for longer flash life and faster recycling :)
