    ipod advice

Personally, I'd avoid any of the i-pod classics. They're full of bugs. Far better with the flash memory ones. In fact, I'm pretty anti i-pod altogether. i-tunes is crap when your OS is XP. I have a Sony NWZA818 (8gb MP3/video player) which uses Windows media player 11 to 'drag and drop' music...

Got the S3 to 140mph . (not on public roads)

[ QUOTE ] Having a car that's geared to go very fast is useful though, for example if you have enough low down torque eg large capacity V8 just over tick over it can be very helpful for economy and comfort, you don't want a car that's revving it's nuts of to do 80-90mph as it just gets annoying...

Got the S3 to 140mph . (not on public roads)

[ QUOTE ] To be honest the top speed discussion is interesting and largely the stuff of pub conversations... I reckon in the real world of every day point to point driving, I would rather have a car that accelerates hard over a smaller range than one that winds up to massive speeds. I usually...

Got the S3 to 140mph . (not on public roads)

I don't think it would matter much whether it was a 5 speed or 6 speed diesel. The final drive ration of 30.8mph per 1000rpm was for the 6 speeder, but I can't see the 5 speeder having such different gearing that it's only pulling 3500rpm at 136mph ! 136mph is possible,I suppose, but the car...

Got the S3 to 140mph . (not on public roads)

[ QUOTE ] Also, does a re-map shift the rev limiter in the software? [/ QUOTE ] It may do in a petrol, but I doubt in a diesel. The governer sets the rev limit in a diesel. Actually,I doubt it in a petrol as well. I'm pretty sure they all just work within the standard rev range. They...

Got the S3 to 140mph . (not on public roads)

[ QUOTE ] Bowfer, It's been re-mapped and is putting out approx 155-160 bhp but it was a very long stretch of (ahem) runway [/ QUOTE ] It still doesn't tally though. That sort of power might get you to 136mph,but it certainly won't still be pulling strongly. Then there's the matter of...

Got the S3 to 140mph . (not on public roads)

[ QUOTE ] I've been to 136 in my TDI A3 on a private road (ahem) that was at about 3500rpm and it was still pulling hard. [/ QUOTE ] I thought this sounded well-fishy. According to Audi's gearing,a 130bhp tdi will be doing around 107mph at 3500rpm. That might explain why his car was "still...

Got the S3 to 140mph . (not on public roads)

[ QUOTE ] An indicated 150 is easily achievable on an S3 and i do indeed achieve this indication on a regular basis. No more dangerous than doing 90+ in a heavy van IMO. [/ QUOTE ] Try telling that to the judge

[ QUOTE ] I've been to 136 in my TDI A3 on a private road (ahem) that was at about 3500rpm and it was still pulling hard. I decided to back off after going past a 2CV which was doing about 50 - I think i scared the sh!te out of them - lol [/ QUOTE ] Standard car ? If so,the highest brake...

    Amount of oil use....

There's been a thread about this in the newer A3 forum. My car has used 3+ litres in 7000 miles. Some report more, some report less. It's all very vague. I believe the manual does state 1 litre per 1000 miles in within normal tolerances, which is ridiculous. Practically a two-stroke car.

    Weird noise while reversing

I'm guessing, but could it just be the brakes themselves ? When braking in reverse, you're asking the calipers/pads to work in the opposite direction to their normal use,so even the tiniest amount of play or float will cause a clunk ? Bike brakes certainly do this when wheeling them backwards...

smokers - window open, Raining, who gets wet?

Safe to assume you throw your butts out of the window as well then.... My how I love other people's butts bouncing towards my bonnet... I don't usually condone willy-nilly fining, but I would support it for that. I have nothing against smokers,by the way. I just think that if it's okay to...

[ QUOTE ] Until we spotted the ostrich lying there on one on the benches. Ostriches? Roadkill? Yeah well maybe in the Serengeti but not exactly what you'd expect in Fife! Imagine your surprise if a ****** great black and white 7ft bird legged it out in front of your car on a country lane at...

    Remap and insurance

From what I can gather,if you were to have an accident the insurers/assessors/police would have to have grounds to suspect that the accident was down to something outwith the realms of a standard car to even investigate the car. In other words,if a standard looking 1.0 Metro has a crash at...

Nearing 3year waranty - what should get checked before ?

I once got a tip from a magazine. If you spend around £100ish you can get a very detailed report from the AA giving a breakdown(sic) of any problems with the car. Then take it into your dealer and insist they sort them all under warranty.

    OSRAM bulbs, please help

Be interesting to see what you think of them. I've noticed an improvement on dip, with roadsigns being lit up farther up the road. I actually think full beam is worse though. God knows if the blue sidelights look good or not. I've never seen my own car approach me to find out.
