New A1 question on the 1 litre engine

Hello everyone I'm going to have a look at a new A1 TFSI 30. Possibly an S-line in trendy Chronos grey. :friendly wink: The press write ups have been generally good and this recent version seems to have a bit more space. I haven't had a modern car with a 1.0 litre engine before and wouldn't...

Bristol Audi - poor service, is this typical?

I wanted a new driver's side door wiring loom/harness as mine had several fractures in several places and was not easy to repair. I telephoned Bristol Audi to check if they could get the part - yes, no problem but would take a couple of days to get it in. The irritating thing was that Audi...

    Control arm replacement

Hi I've got MOT advisories for the both rear bushes on my front control arms (aka wishbones) plus one for the nearside balljoint cover. I've done a lot of similar work on a BMW Z3 I restored and so I'm taking the view to replace the lot on both sides (wishbones and ball joints) as the others...

    Air con re-gas - I was impressed

With the weather getting a bit warmer, I thought I’d get my air-con serviced. It’s been working OK but I haven’t had it re-gassed since April 2015. I changed the cabin/pollen filter (Mann £8.52) over the weekend and got it re-gassed at a local garage today (special offer £45) where I chatted to...

How long you owned your daily driven A3 8p?

It is. You need to raise the car and have it more or less level - I used wheel ramps on the front with the car facing down a slight downward slope. From memory the filler and drain plugs were an internal hex around 10mm? I did a lot of checking to ensure the right oil and used Titan Sintofluid...

How long you owned your daily driven A3 8p?

Just over 7-years - 65,000 miles when I bought it. Now on 112,000 miles. I do a lot of work on it myself. Oil changed once a year, changed the gearbox oil at 100,000. When warmed up 50 mpg on A roads and 60+ mpg on a motorway run. Very reliable and burns no oil between services. I could...

    Oil change

Personally I wouldn't worry at all as long as it is the right viscosity with the VAG approvals. As you say, Castrol often comes in 4 ltr containers. More important to get some clean oil in the engine.

suggested best grip tyres for a 2010 audi a3 sportback

I've used Goodyear Efficient Grip on my 16 inch A3 wheels throughout the 7-years I've had the car. No problems whatsoever and their prices in my area are always a lot more competitive than Michelin/Continental.

Help with removal of black panel between the two side windows

Footnote:- Both of my little plastic end caps at the bottom of the B pillars were brittle and so the little hooks and attached clip, broke. Beware of Ebay - several outlets were selling replacements (new and 2nd hand), including Cardiff Audi, for around £9 - £10 each - a total of around...

Help with removal of black panel between the two side windows

Job done. Light rub down, de-grease and three coats of Hycote Matt Black. Always been impressed with this paint - the finish is superb and totally professional looking. Thanks to all for the replies above.

Help with removal of black panel between the two side windows

Hi The black plastic panel between my two side windows (4-door sportback) is looking rather faded. I would like to remove it and give it a coat or two of fresh matt black. Any tips on how it is removed? Thanks

100,000+ miles manual gearbox oil change

I've experimented with a few gear oils in German cars, over the years, and the trouble comes with more generic 75w-90 oils which can be very thick in colder weather. There is nothing special or magic about the OE gear oil - other than costing around £40 per litre!

100,000+ miles manual gearbox oil change

Having hit 11-years and 100,000+ miles on my little daily runner, I decided to treat it to a gearbox oil change when doing my annual engine oil change. Did a bit of research, including checking on Titan's own application chart, and the consistent recommendation was 2.3 litres of Titan...

1.6 petrol - bad starting, huge flatspot, no error codes

Does your car have a single "coil pack" with HT leads between the pack and the plugs or the more modern individual coil packs on top of each plug? I thought it was probably the latter? You would expect one to last more than 3-years but I do not know the background i.e. was a 2nd hand one or...

1.6 petrol - bad starting, huge flatspot, no error codes

My guess would be an ignition coil (s). They typical "play up" when hot (heat soak) and cause starting problems. Commonly they do not present themselves on a code reader apart from a generic misfire code. Sensors would normally throw some sort of code and wouldn't usually limit a problem to...

    Thermostat faulty?

Mine runs a bit cold in the winter as well and I have a new thermostat on the "to do" list for 2021. I've had a brief survey of the job and it looks like on the CBBB engine (which I reckon is a great engine) I'll need to move the fuel filter bracketry (leaving the fuel filter pipes connected)...

    2010 a3 sportback overheating issue

I don't know your garage and they may be fantastic. Unfortunately, many high street garages are lazy, they don't want to spend too long diagnosing a problem and many are looking for costly (to you), relatively easy (for them) work. Water getting into coolant often shoes itself as a creamy...

    2010 a3 sportback overheating issue

My guess would be the water pump. The fact that your radiator is staying cold suggests to me that it isn't receiving hot coolant to be cooled. It is known that with age, the water pump impeller can stop spinning or freewheel and so not keep pace with increased engine revs; and so not circulate...

Halogen Bulbs Please Recommend For Improved Brightness.

Both tweaks made things a bit better - but not really "night & day" difference :smile new:. My lights also seemed to be aimed low, I suspect that MOT tests only pick up on beams aimed too high. I think mine were Osram Nightbreakers Laser next generation - or similar. They seem to change the...
