This has been an issue for the past few months on my A4 B7.
Checked steering fluid and all seems fine. The noise doesn't really bother me, but just want to get it sorted before it becomes more problematic.
Thoughts on what it could be?

Just to add to this thread. My mates 2000 registered A4 1.8t suffered with a failed oil pump last week. Took out the entire engine by cracking the head gasket.
Didn't know this problem was with petrol models?
Update.
So I finally got my car back. I had the uprated 100mm hex shaft fitted as well as the balance shaft (KMB Parts Direct). The sump was also cleaned out of all the underlying dirt/sludge.
The car drives a lot smoother and there is no weird whirring noises on acceleration (something Audi...
I use Castrol 5W-30 fully synthetic.
Costs around £50 as i purchase the 4 litre and the 1 litre capacity as a top up if needed.
I should switch to longlife...
Just a local garage, but the chap that works there knows his stuff. It was supposed to be completed today, but I've had to leave the car with him for 2 more days. Labour is deffos going to be in the £££s.
2 years but they do give unlimited mileage.
I'm getting the balance shaft and hex changed today at 121,000 miles. Car has never had any issues or warning lights. I'm hoping the car sees out 200k.
Recently purchased parts supplied by KMB and will have the longer 100mm hex and oil pump balance shaft fitted in the next couple of days as a precaution.
Let's hope this is worth it...

I think the re-manufactured oil pump balance shaft and the 100mm hex key is next on the list.
KMB have some decent prices. Can anyone vouch for them?

Having read several different threads about oil pump failures and the expense involved I couldn't really find the answer I was looking for.
