In fact, the 2-cylinder mode is shown very clearly on the MY2014 A3s, but the DIS has to be switched to instantaneous or average fuel consumption. On a manual, it is very easy to put the engine in 2-cylinder mode by a slight release of the pressure on the accelerator at 70 mph in 6th.

The cylinder block is the same, but the heads are different to accommodate the rather different cams. The turbos could be different, as well---this could be checked by someone with access to ETKA.
