You're quite right but cold weather won't suddenly clobber my mpg from 28 to 20.

Anything is possible at a price. In all honesty, unless you fancy the challenge, for the amount of money / pain fitting a turbo to a 2.0 FSI, you would be better trading it in for a 1.8T which is more modifiable.

If this was a symptom on a BMW (the engines I know very well), the first place to check would be the Idle Air Control Valve - these get coked up and often need a clean out with a bit of carb cleaner.I assume the 2.5TDI has one so I'd suggest that.
