Had this problem last year but on the near-side. Removed the foam, replaced the sensor and cleaned the plug. Light has not come on since. Price of sensor at time was £67.95.

Sorry about the spelling its actually 'Dielectric Grease'. Its an anti-corrosion grease which prevents arcing and voltage leaks. You apply it to the electrical contacts. Here is a link to some on E-Bay.

I think your alternator pulley should have a free-wheeling clutch inside it. They are designed to take out any snatch in the belt when the engine speed quickly changes from high to low, this then helps to stop the automatic tensioner from snapping.
