Not heard a rattle on mine (2014 (64) 1.6tdi, 24k) so it's not a characteristic... Could try opening up the bonnet, turning the engine on - and getting a friend to hold some revs if you can't hear the rattle on idle - and see if you can hear where it's coming from? Could be as simple as a loose...

I'm after getting one, but have seen some get delivered with wrong dimensions etc. - which one did you get? As DJAlix says, Plasti-Dip is an option, though it could scratch and start to peel with constant use. I think you're spot on with Sand > Prime > Paint!
