Sounds like a gear linkage either loose or worn possibly. Or at the worst end of the scale, the 1st gear synchromesh is dead. It's an easily fixed problem but expensive to do, requires gearbox out and sent off.
Any crunching or grinding noises at any point when selecting gears?
Boot problem sounds like the microswitch. Remove the plastic trim on the boot and have a look around the release handle area, same trouble on mine turned out to be a loose connection.
