Yeah you don't need to do that. Every time I've taken off an airbag I've just disconnected the battery as a precaution and left the ignition alone.
I have also disconnected an airbag before without removing the battery (forgot) and it was fine.
I'd still disconnect the battery though.

Hard copy of the real software can't be beat. Especially if you're in a workshop without great internet connection.

Yep this is fairly standard. Just give it a clean out and seal it up best again as you can.
