You could have tried running the car no thermostat to see if that ruled the thermostat out.

You wont be able to get power from the harness, its can bus controlled. Best bet is to run a new live from a switched feed in the fuse box.

Do you have an engine light on? If not i wouldnt bother, its only an emission control.
It could also be the steering rack. There should be no play in that at all
