Well I picked up my new S3 BE a few days ago and am gradually finding my way around the car.

I've had a string of Audis before (A4s + A6 Quattro) so it's a familiar feeling stepping in 1 again but I was worried that the A3 was a watered down model. I've swapped it from a W209 CLK but I also have a Discovery 3 so the S3 is a very different experience for me.

Things I like so far;

Performance - I'm treating it gently for the first 1,000m but am already enjoying the effortless thrust at almost any speed.
Engine - Some reviews suggest the S3 has a 'rough' engine. Mine must be faulty then because, for a 4 cyl, I think it's silky smooth. Not quite Beemer 6 cyl territory but certainly not at all rough. I haven't ventured into the higher revs yet so that may change.
(Most) Build quality - my previous Audis were always as solid when I sold them as when I bought them so I knew the score. However, there's also some of evidence of cost cutting which is a little disappointing.
  • Luggage tie downs in boot - my A6's were a thing of beauty, hinged, damped, chrome items. The S3 has cheap looking pressed steel items.
  • Carpet - really thin and quite cheap feeling
  • Lack of Map Reading lights - on a £30k car??!
  • Door handles - just feel unsubstantial and flimsy
Paint Finish - far better than the CLK and the Discovery
Seats - fit like a glove and supremely comfortable
Bluetooth - really works well although I would've like a pair of call/end buttons somewhere on the MFSW rather than the press of the scroll wheel

Things I'm not liking (so far);

Some build quality/cost cutting - see above
Easy entry seats - I cannot get the hang of getting them to return to original position. Am I alone? Is there a knack as, with 2 kids, it's a pain in the rectum.
Audio - both the frustrating lack of (true) iPod integration and the sound from the Bose. Both my A4 and A6 had Bose and they sounded superb. The S3's is clear enough but just sounds a little, well feeble. Needs a lot more depth at low volume I think.
Ride - ouch! Most of the time I think it's a good compromise but occasionally you can hit a pothole and it feels like you've hit a brick in the road. Speed humps have to be taken at walking pace also. Does the ride improve after a breaking in period or does long term ownership eventually compress your vertebrae?
Consumption - haven't got it over 26mpg yet and, considering I haven't really flexed my right foot yet, I hope it improves.

Having said all of the above which may sound like a whinge, I love it and driving it just makes me giggle it's so much fun.

1st mod carried out today - swapped the front interior light for the map reading/ambient console. Took me less than 10 mins.

26 mpg...good one,flex the pedal and 18 is on the cards,Welcome to AS.net :icon_thumright:

lol, give it time!!! Sure your right foot will become heavy haa haa its an S3 after all!!!

agree with you on the Blose system, my mate's A4 cabrio's system totally kills mine, and with less speakers. Slightly dissappointed with the bass and punchyness from it.

The lack of basics in a 30k car is not expectable...To have to pay £90 extra for a lighting pack that would be std on a £9k Nissan Micra is taking the ****. Same with a MF wheel and auto wipers and lights !!All std equip on a 3 series. Audi make nice cars but they are not good value.

3.8!!! omg! thought mine was bad, i feel good now lol........

But to be honest, bet you were flying!!!

3.8... ouch!!!! bet u had a smile on your face though lol

I certainly did...mrs didnt....

Lack of Map Reading lights - on a £30k car??!

Really bugs the hell out of me!

Good write up Sugs, but I think the audio is better than you make out. Are you playing CD's or mp3's via sd card?

I generally get between 28-30 now, (DSG) but with the odd few journeys up to 33 if lots of traffic (Stage 1) with some quick blasts here and there, as for the stereo pretty pleased with mine, but the BE has uprated Amp and Speakers I think. as for the ipod control the AMI works pretty well with the RNSE latest version, and now I can plug Iphone into it and run a speed camera data base as well as play itunes, all works great with the sound dropping in volume when I hit a speed camera area. the only flaw so far if you lose GPS it all stops.

I agree with the seats though on a 3 door, pain in the back side, though they are so new they are stiff.
But gotta remember it is a sports hatch, and a dam fast one at that, so ride etc is about right for me, sure hard on really rough roads.

Just happened to notice the mpg at the right time, normally its on range but thought id see how low it went! On average I get about 300 miles to the tank though. Motorway cruising is fine at 70 but if your in a hurry and in the turbo spool then its nasty!

Ah! cant have it both ways!!! heavy right foot and bad mpg!!! but satisfaction!!! heavy foot I say!!!

Current source is CDs or FM through Concert II. I wish I'd gone for the RNS now as it would have given me more options for iPod and SD but I thought it was just a SAT NAV which I don't need. I'm not saying the sound quality is bad, just a little lightweight compared with A4 and A6 Bose and even the standard Stereo on the Merc. Is there an actual sub in the system somewhere or are they just using more amplification into the std speakers? The A6 had a big sub behind one of the panels in the boot.

Rns-e retrofit is possible, not what you want to hear now though. I made a mistake with my s3...2 cars, one with rns-e and bose or one with buckets and black roof. Didnt know rns-e could be retrofit so picked the one with it. Gutted to say the least!

ouch! but hey ure smilling now!

I have changed all of that in mine in the last month, added RNS-E, AMI, Multi Cd player, with the BE the speakers are uprated, and an amp added, the Guy who installed it said it was pretty good over the standard A3 system, just noticed as well you can get a suspension package looks well worth it too

Oops! What have I started?

Anyway back to the thread..

Sugs, you planning on doing anything to it?

Once I've sorted the interior lighting (rear map reading lights on order), I'm just on a mission to sort out the sound system. As I posted previously, I'm thinking of going down the road of fitting an RNS-E and the aftermarket Alpine unit to give full iPod integration. Still have some queries about how it's done though;
  • Do I have to do some messing around with antennaes to get the RNS to work with existing Concert II ones
  • Do I have a GPS antennae already in the shark fin or do I have to fit one?
  • Do I have to do any VAG COM coding
  • Is the latest RNS (with high def screen and SD slot) compatible with Alpine unit? Seems to be some suggestion it isn't.

Other than that I just intend to leave it fairly standard and spend my time driving it rather than tinkering.

Brett Butler - I'd be interested in your RNS install. Do you have any input on the queries above? Does your AMI play and charge the iPod and show track names etc.

I had the RNS-E added it included a GPS Ariel that was mounted under the over the main console, they took it out anyhow, I recall him saying that was where they were putting it.
The Latest RNS has hi res screen, and 2 SD slots. I heard it was not compatible with the Alpine unit, but tbh I would add the AMI anyhow. it does charge the Ipod, Iphone, it shows all the track names, and everything is controlled from the main head unit, including repeat, one all and song etc., not sure if there is a shuffle.
As my other thread if you use an Iphone, and have Blue tooth, it all works with head unit and you can use the speed camera data base app on the iphone at same time all working with sat nav as well.

I looked into it all quite a lot, and ended up with all the audi gear, I also added a multi CD player as well in the glove compartment.
I have a BE, and that comes standard with the speaker and 6 channel amp upgrade, I am to understand quite an improvement on the Bose basic speaker set up.

My only real gripes, apart form the speed camera data base still not with the RNS, no touch screen, and the Post code search for sat nav is not full post code, some what sad and dated for something that cost a lot of money still.
I have not tried the voice stuff, but guess it is pretty dam good.

and Sugs, Think Waring192, was reffering to under the bonnet :p
