Boring question...tyres?

Okay my car is a 58 plate 2.0L TDI A3 Quattro Sport, has done 30,000 miles and is in need of new tyres.

The tyres I currently have are:

225/45 ZR17 94Y

I just want similar tyres to the ones I have right now but when I go to KwikFit website and try to enter this combination, I can't. The closest I can get is 225/45 17 Y. Would they be okay?

I'm not necessarily going to buy from KwikFit...just using their site as an example.

I know it's a clueless question and apologise in advance :zen:
 
225/45 17Y is absolutely fine, provided the load index is the same. The Z in the tyre description simply means the tyre is rated at 149mph or more. Y is 186mph. You would be fine with anything marked w Y or Z. Like i say the load index (94) should be equal to the original tyres. Personally i would suggest finding a good local independent, you will get a better deal and should also get a better service.

So I'm looking for a tyre that will reduce road noise on the A14/A11/M11 where I do most of my driving, anything in particular I should be looking out for? Not so sure the independents will be cheaper to be honest as they tend not to buy in bulk :confused: but I also don't think Kwik-Fit will be the cheapest either :D
 
WWW.CAMSKILL.CO.UK are really good for tyres probably the cheapest on the net.....depends how much your local tyre places will charge you to get them fitted as to wether it works out cost effective.
 
think about it like this. You have a business and someone walks in with a product they have not bought from you and asks you to fit it. are you going to do it cheaply? are you going to give them the level of service you would normally?
I would also remind you that yes although places like Kwik fit buy in bulk, they also have a lot more overheads than a small independent.
 
Try the independents murkins. They need our support and the prices may pleasantly surprise you. I've used my local one for Years for tyres on various cars for me and the missus. He is always cheaper than the main outfits and even cheaper than online. I ring around others first to see, but always go back to him.

Back in the day my local tyre place down south was also cheaper than the main chain outfits. Maybe the independents haven't got such big margins / overheads to support...
 
Yeah most of the back street places by me are consistantly cheaper than camskill, black circles etc etc

Best thing to do is get chatting to someone in your local place, build up a relationship over the years and they will sort you out. I've done that with my local garage and its got to the point where they get me butties and repair punctures for free. Its good to make friends!!

Agree with this.

Local fitter to me has been consistently cheaper than the online suspects for a while and you can hang around watching the work being done for reassurance.

Wow, thanks for all the advice people. :) Might be worth going to CamSkill and asking my local garage to fit them...
I've also found a place called Hi-Q...anyone used them?

My current tyres are Pirelli: these ones

They're a lot more expensive than the Falken ones...are they a lot better than the Falkens? What's the reason for the price difference?
 
Ive used Hi-Q before now. Found them to be very helpful, they have a long list of tyres to suit all budgets, I was looking for the S4 and they could supply tyres from as little as £50. They will ship them in from another branch within a few hours if they don't have the ones you want in stock and have done free balancing on my spare. They never look as busy as Kwikfit, which is probably why I have never had to wait when I have been in there.
 
Hi-Q is a franchise so the service will vary from branch to branch.

Camskill buy tyres by the container and re-sell with minimal mark ups, so it's hard for some small tyre garages that don't have the buying power to compete. It's definitely worth shopping around on more than price through. 90% of places in my experience will offer no guarantee or make little effort not to scratch your wheels, so when you find a good place, try to stick with them!
 
Pro tyre are good, their machines ensure no marking of the rims can occur.
 
just had two michelin ps3 fitted at Costco wholesale 225 zr40 18 xl for £280...best price anywhere:faint:
