Taking the A3 to Europe

Afternoon All,

Only joined audi-sport last week and already have a question for you....any advice much appreciated!

I'm jacking in work and off to do a season in France /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/groovy.gif and really want to take the car with me. Had a word with my insurance company (elephant) and they said they wont insure me for 4 months in France, the maximum they will do is 30 days. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/[censored].gif

Does anyone know of a competitive UK insurance company that would give me cover in France for this amount of time?? Or any broker that I could take European cover out with??

That's odd. I have my car covered with elephant and I don't even need to tell them if I take the car abroad. Which I do frequently, although admittedly not for more than a few weeks at any one time.

Could elephant not suggest a broker? Surely this is a common enough request?

PS - a season in France at this time of year sounds like a ski-season. I really really recommend that you get some snow-tyres if you going to be up in a ski-resort for 4 months. I have a set on different alloys for skiing and they make such a difference.

Yes I thought this wouldn’t be much of a problem for them but they couldn’t even suggest a definite alternative. They could only suggest I call one of the bigger insurers who they thought might be more flexible or search the internet.

Spoke to a friend last night who seems to think insuring it with a French company is easy and a lot cheaper so going to look into that!

Yes it is a ski-season – I have been wondering how my GSD3’s would cope out there, thanks for the advice any suggestions on which snow tyres??

First winter for two years I haven't been living in the mountains, I would definitely recomend snow tyres. Had some amusing (now, anyway) incidents in the past that might have been avoided!

i used to insure my car via Gibralter (Lloyds company) on a one year green card, all i had to have was a uk address, this was done via a English broker here in Portugal.
 
I think mine are Michelin M&S tyres but they might be Dunlops. I can't remember without looking - I'll look tomorrow and let you know. They cost a similar amount to normal tyres. The mytyres website can provide them but I actually lucked out by finding a set of unusual 16" TT alloys with hardly-used winter tyres on eBay (UK). I think they may be a specific S3/TT winter-alloy design as have only ever seen one other set on a Swiss-registered S3 while skiing. They cost me £360 all in. Bargain of the century in my view.
 
That one year green card sounds interesting, think I’ll give Lloyds a call!

I’ve still got my original 16” wheels so I could just shove some snow tyres on them. Will check out mytyres.

Make sure the buddha bar is one of the first on your list. And when it snows, Chommosier and Nyon!

Will be going back in January (just for a week /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cry.gif) so shall keep a look out for an English reg A3!

Yes I did a week in Morzine in February - was fantastic skiing and the Buddha bar is very cheesy. Plus there's the one next door with the air-hockey tables and the spinning board (kinda wheel of fortune type thing) for winning drinks. We cleaned the bar out totally on that last year!

Very twisty road in too. Worth driving to the big cable car that goes up the cliff face to Avoriaz and taking that way up to avoid the queues plus there's a passable black run back down to the carpark.

Going to Meribel this year and then St Moritz.

Well when i was still insured in the UK I was with Elephant and I certainly had to tell them. The only reason you wouldn't is if they provide a green card with your insurance package as standrad...which I don't think they do, do they?

You have to have a green card to travel anywhere outside of your own country, which luckily the Dutch insurers provide as the main insurance document so never any problems.

I would double check with Elephant first before shooting off on a ferry anywhere.
 
Well I rang Elephant and they told the call was appreciated but unnecessary! Go figure...

By the way I looked and my winter tyres are "Dunlop SP Winter Sport M2s". The tread is somewhat tracterish but they actually don't generate too much roadnoise and are amazing on loose and icy surfaces.
