I'm possibly embarking on drive to italy next week, so need to know best routes, how much tolls are & anything to be aware of about roads etc if anyone has done it.

My route was tunnel, calais to strasbourg, over switzerland & down through milan to venezia.

I will peruse the net but thought I'd ask the lads.

haha lol just playing pal , know i was thinking the same thing to drive to italy with the family its meant to be v nice but id rather go in a diesel.... lol

but fancy doing it , would be fun ...

who you going with the misses , are you staying somewhere once you get there id like to camp out if i went ....
 
All depends if I'm driving on my tod or with the mrs as she's being the same old royal pain in my ****, I tell yer italian women man, bane of my..........but also have there benefits, nudge nudge wink wink, lol

Idea was to take few days to drive through, maybe stopping few places along route overnight then get to venice & then going of to croatia for 1.5 weeks, then back to venice for while where I plan to work on my car while she sleeps, I cant do this siesta thing at all, but guess thats why they live longer, anyway, then drive back.

Hopefully drive back with all my mods finished, lmfao as though.
 
sound good mate , you should add pics of scenery what route you took and that , a little guide to europe so to say , then it saves me fambling about lol... italian women yeah thick butts and olive skin ....woohoo
 
I have driven to Switzerland and Austria many times. I generally use the same route as you are thinking of for Switzerland. Tunnel, Calais, A26, A4, Strasbourg, A5 down to Basel and into Switzerland.

The tolls for the French autoroute works out about £30.00 each way. If you use the motorways in Switzerland you have to purchase a Vignette which is valid for 14 months and costs CHF40.00 (around £20.00). I find it's better to purchase the Vignette at the border at Basel than pre-purchase one. The queues at Basel can be quite long sometimes but there always seems to be much less traffic in the 'buy a Vignette' lane.

The drive across France can be great with very quiet autoroutes. German autobahns can be fun, especially the no spied limit section, but they can also be very busy. Sunday is always the best day because trucks are not allowed to use the autobahns on Sundays.

Some basic info. If I can help any more let me know. I'm off to Germany (Passau) and Austria at the beginning of September and really looking forward to the drive.

Unless you already booked your tunnel ticket Im going to guess mid-school holidays its going to be a bit on the pricey side so try these two might be able to get a cheaper crossing:

Personally Id go Dover - Dunkerque then drive through Belgium, Holland then Germany. early morning or at the weekend it should be dead quiet, use the money saved by not using the toll on fuel and fly through Germany...

Im off round Germany for a few weeks in August cant wait for some nice weather, beer, roads, kebab, techno.... :):):):):)
