Im am happy to say that after weeks of trying to sell the S3 i have finally taken a deposit yesterday.
I only got £21750 but what the hell!!!! It had to go!! Ive taken a 5k hit on it since i bought it in January but i guess theres no point in crying over spilt milk!!!!
Now the M3 is going for service on the weekend and then sending it to a bodywork specialist to get little bits and bats sorted, then it will be all nice and sparkly!!!!!

So we'll finally get to see some pics then!

dont want to sound like a **** but you have picked the worst time to buy an m3!!!! unless you have got it very cheap or plan on keeping it for a few years you will take a big hit.

I think youd take a hit on any car to tell you the truth!!!! If it another 5k im still okay with that!

Ill get some picks of the M3 once it is with me!

Err, why?!?

I'm assuming he's thinking along the lines of big engine/fuel costs.
I think M3's are safe enough though.
They have such a fanbase they're pretty immune to market forces, IMO.
Fuel could hit £10 a gallon, people will still want M3's.

Now that sounds good!!!

You should have a car because YOU want it. Not because someone else may (or may not) like the colour, the interior, the wheels, the engine, the tax 1, 2, 3 years down the line. Cars cost money. End of. If you have the finances, do it and enjoy it. You are a long time dead...

The latest version of the M3 can be picked up now 6 months old at £10K less than list...

The saloon's seem to have been hit even harder

J.

M3 is a hoot to drive, I was really impressed when I drove a mates a few months back.
In fact the M3 was on my shortlist before I bought the S3.

If Im honest though, the styling and interior is starting to date a little now.
Enjoy it, its obviously what you what to take a 5K thump on the S3.

cheers
Paul

Well im glad i aint getting the new then!
Im not too worried about the price drop on the one im getting to tell you the truth, i think it should be okay for at least a year or so and like i said anything under a 5k hit id be okay

I had 2 E46 M3s before my S3. Simply fantastic car. And real life economy probably better than an S3. Really!

im saying it becuase im trying to get rid of an e46 on a 54 plate, carbon black, red leather, nav, fbmwsh, 28k and no dealers are willing to pay a good price.

Take a look at all the big engine cars that are getting p/x for smaller ones at the moment!!!

As for the m3 being more economical are you having a laugh?

Buying a car JUST because you want it and ignoring the financial aspects is stupid unless you have masses of disposable cash. If that was the case i wouldnt choose an m3.

RS4s with under 20,000 miles on the clock and all the juicy extras are going on AutoTrader for £33k.
Better than the E46 M3 by a country mile in every respect.

That's interesting.
Does it steady off after that?
How are RS4's and the like fairing, in comparison?

Read my post: "If you have the finances..."

Princinally, the point I was trying to make was regarding how others may perceive it in this uncertain world of fuel costs, taxes, etc. The choice is yours to make and yours alone.

Besides, you can always sell the car if you find it's not financially what you thought or ownership wise what you expected. It's NOT the end of the world.

Maybe, but you wouldn't [need to] spend £33K on an E46 M3. An approved M3 starts at £15K.

Well if had the extra 10K i wouldnt buy an RS4, id be looking down the route of an M5, POWER, POWER, POWER!!!!!:scared2:

But its when you try and sell the car that the problems arise!!! people dont want them which is why they are dropping in value so much.

I get what your saying but i just think anybody buying one now must be young and wreckless or mad.

For £36k you could have a 57 plate m3 with under 10k!!!! look how much they have dropped.

LOL another car which knowbody wants to buy, just like the m6 dealers are stuck with them.

I went to take a look at an rs4 and the dealer was begging me to have a look at an m6 he had in. In the ned he said he just cant shift them and will never take another in p/x.

Its your money but after having to bail my brother out of daft car purchases losing £5k here,£5k there it starts to mount up.

But what your looking at is a new car that hasnt been out for long, you always have a sharp loss in the first 12 months from the list price, sometimes longer than 12 months before prices seem to level off for a while at a certian price range, im talking about performance cars here by the way, i dont thin the e46 m3 will be falling too sharply over the next year or so though as its the older model and would have dropped sharply at the release of the new one

Bleedin' ell - see what you mean. Just been on AutoTrader and they are going for next to nothing. Ford Focus money.
Mustn't be able to shift them for toffee .....

I think the 6 series has dated so fast it's unbelievable. No wonder they're giving them away. Interior looks awful now as well.

There's never a good time to buy/sell a car no matter what you have or what you want. I'm sure we have all been there at a dealer when they have said oh sorry sir, no call for them now it's got black tyres or some other excuse. That will no doubt happen in 9-18 months time when all those nice trendy white ones come up for changeover/swap...

Perhaps we should all sell our cars, force all the manufactures out of business and trawl around in an electric heap?

As per previous post: CARS COST MONEY!!! The more they start off at, the more they lose! That's the market place and always has been. True enough, people are considering fuel and tax today but trust me people will still buy them and manufacturers will still be making them...

It's all about personal choice at the end of the day.

Having had 2 E46 M3s in the past, they dropped in value then and they still do; that's expensive performance cars for you. Fuel cost was not an issue.

JUX.... Just ben having a browse on Autotrader myself. How much did you negotiate that M3 for with your mate? And what year is it??

i think you are totally missing the point, the econonmy is a mess FACT, all the media hype is scaring people FACT, the fuel situation is putting people off big cars FACT.

Yes you will always lose money and yes nice cars will always be expensive but you cannot deny that in this climate its the worst it has been for a long time.

well, basically whatever i sold the s3 for, so £21750 i guess!

Its 04 2004

Christ, JUX mate i'd take a look on Autotrader.... For 22K you should be looking at an 05/06 totally original example with average mileage by current prices. I'm shocked myself by what they're going for.

whats the mileage?
36000, fully loaded, with hardtop, also got 2.5K wheels on aswell as originals, so all in all i think its okay, hes just getting it serviced for me aswell on Saturday from BMW, also getting all bits and bats of the bodywork sorted aswell

yeah you can have our 54 plate one for that price with pleasure :)

99% of the time, once you start throwing money at expensive performance/luxury cars you will get stung.

Up until couple of years ago I was spending upto 10K on Golf Gtis, Corrados Civic type R etc.
I bought pampered cars privately, kept them pampered, didnt do mega miles and then sold them privately, and lost a couple of grand at the most over a 12-24 ownership, basically peanuts.
In fact they would depreciate slower than I was paying them off.

The last 2 cars Ive spent a lot more, 17K on previous MK5 Gti and 25K on current car (S3). Both of which I have/will taken a HUGE hit.

Basically, we like and buy the `nice `stuff, AUDIs, BMWs etc.. and as long we do we will be punished in the pocket.

The only way to avoid losing BIG and get around pretty swiftly is to buy much older cars for much less cash, that are way down the depreciation curve. AND accept you are not in the lastest `toy`.
Difficult to have both.

Very true but harking back to my brother again, cars like the m3 and rs4 etc are the cars they have always wanted. But once they drop into the 20k bracket and especially when a new model is out is when you take a big hit until they drop to the £10k mark.

Spending £20k on an ed30 or £15k on r56 cooper s would make more sense, both similar price but which will hold its value better and be easier to sell.

I'm not missing any point. We all earn and spend our money how we choose. Worrying about the economy/government mis-management is not going to change it. Possibly having some confidence to actually buy what you want/aspire to might improve the situation and stop all the naysayers...

So... we should all stop buying cars then? Is that your cunning ploy to whip up the economy??!!? It's a vicious circle.

And to pick up on your previous point (which I missed). Yes, the 2 two M3s that I owned were, on average, no worse than the S3 that I currently own on fuel and sometimes better. I can only speak from experience though. I assume too that you also have an S3 and this has not been your experience?

I dont "worry" about the economy,i sell property for a living so i need to be pretty upbeat about the climate. You can be smart with what and when you buy and imo paying £22k for an old shape m3 isnt.

Yes i have an s3 and the m3 drinks more fuel.

Anyway i think we will have to agree to disagree,we just have different views.

can i just quickly step in and ask why no one even considers an s4 in this scenero......resume...
