Hey everyone,

Sorry to start off on a problem post! I have recently bought a 2001 A3 1.8T quattro from a dealer not based localy to me. It was serviced and MOT'd before I picked it up. But then driving the 100 miles or so home fine, in the last 5 miles the oil pressure light and beeping came on so I pulled over, read the manual, then tried again after a bit and it was fine. The next day I drove it all of 1 mile before the same happened and it went into 'limp' mode.

I took it to my local garage and they changed the oil and oil filter and generaly cleaned the oil system, on the recommendation of the dealer. This seemed to solve the problem, but after doing 50 miles since this over the weekend, the car has a 'lumpy' idle between 700-900rpm and today after driving it back from work I left it to idle for a minute and noticed white smoke was coming out the exhaust! The car still drove normally apart form this.

Should I be worried?!

Thanks

hi,

well white smoke does tend to sound like a head gasket
try checking for sludge in the coolant resevoir or get a garage to do a compression test

Welcome mate.

I would defo have a reputable garage check it out or if you know anyone with vagcom they maybe able to help?

It could be the headgasket but I would also be looking at the coils, turbo, maf sensor etc.

More importantly I note you bought the car from a dealer. Get on their case. You have a standard 3 month warranty & under trading standards law they should be offering to fix or pay towards the repair.

Good luck!

OK cheers guys. I did check the coolant resevior for sludge but couldn't see any. It had the all the coils done in the last 10k miles. I think I'll take it back to the garage that did the oil work on it see what they say.

I rang the dealer and he reckoned it would be fine after a few days, the smoke was just the some of the carbon that was blocking up the oil filter in the first place coming out, although I am a bit conderned about driving it. Should I be? He also said that any other problems with the car should be refered to the warrenty company he works with. Should he be paying for the work or the warrenty company?

Thanks again guys

Don't believe a word of it! carbon coming out? Also I don't think changing the oil has ever 'fixed' an engine.
I would push hard for your dealer to come and trailer your car away and get him to repair it.

Why has the dealer recommended giving the car an Oil and filter change if the car was supposedly serviced and MOT'd before you bought the car....
surely this would have already been done:shrug:...

C dog....
i'm sorry to hear your having problems with ya car,
couple of things tho.....

How many miles has the car done ?
Has it been regularly serviced through out it's life ?

I'd definately get the codes read, might shed a bit of light, if a sensor is playing up it could cause the lumpy idle.

The important thing here is to push to get the work paid for by the dealer and get them to deal with the warranty company or whoever, they will try to fob you off and send you elsewhere to get money but essentially its down to them to sort it out.
I had a dealers try to get me to pay for MOT repairs out of my own pocket after I had bought the car on condition it passed an MOT (as it had none), told him he needed to invoice the garage direct. Picked my car up the next day!

After I described the problems to the dealer that I was having the day after I got it home and he spoke to a friend who works for Audi who said this oil pressure problem was a common problem after a service between 80k-90k miles. The problem being that the oil filter gets clogged up with carbon and oil doesn't get round the engine, which is why when i check the oil it was higher than recommended as it was 'backing up' in the engine. Has anybody else experienced this?

I spoke to my garage today and they said by the sounds of it, it could be water/ coolant leak to do with the exhasut but they can't look at it untill tomorrow. In the meantime I am waiting for the paperwork from the dealer regarding the warrenty.

Sorry mate, but they are playing games with you....I know you want to believe them, but trust me they are nice only as long as you are there. Let them have it fella cos' you are being peed on...they have a legal responsibility to you, and are stalling,

Well I took it to the garage today and they said the same as the dealer; give it a few days as the smoke is most likley caused by some of the crap still coming out from the blockage. He checked to see if I'm loosing any coolant ( with a blue coloured pump thing?) and said it could be a gasket problem but it has hard to tell. However they did say if this continues for a few more days to talk to them to investigate further.

I have also enlisted the help of a friend with a Vag-Com so I should be able to do some tests of my own soon, although I'm not sure what I'd be looking for...

What a load of ********!!! My same motor in a golf did 140k and was still perfect!

If the oil filter has been blocked and you car run then your motor is ******! Period! I would ask your delaer to explain how and engine can run without oil cirulating round the engine and for the engine to be "fine"! (what a fuckwitt he is!)

White smoke is usually water getting intot he combustion chambers, but on a 18t a head gasket failure is very rare at those miels especially. What can cause a HG to fail is if the waterpump breaks (common) and the head boils. I would contact the previous owner (log book) and ask him if there was ever a problem int the past.
But if you have white smoke and its water, as is susaly the case, your coolant should be running low too. If it is not contaminated with sludge and the oil is not all milky, water is proabbly getting intto the inlet tract via the TURBO! Much more likely to fail at that miles than a HG, and good news it is easier and more reliable to fix.

BUt get your garage to an INDEPENDANT SPEACIALIST, if you tell us your location we can proabbly reocmmend one. Dont drive it until you get it looked at also, I would get yourelf some breakdown cover now if you dont have it then make sure it breaks down 3/4 of a mile from your house on the day you have booked it into the speciaist to lookat it, if you see what I mean"!!

Also, name and shame the idiot delaer who sold it to you please, so we can all avoid him in future. I know salesman come out with some ********, but what he admits is wrong with the car, emans its fapped now!! I think he needs to get a better lie!
