hi guys and girls,

my a3 1.8t over heated tonight dont think it go to high as soon as the icon came on the dash i stoped, i had a look to see what was going on-

1 heaters in car still hot

2 rad fan not working

3 top coolant pipe coming from rad hot, bottom pipe coming from rad cold

any ideas what could cause this

thanks chris

air lock mate im almost certain, u may need to change your temp switch aswell.... drain your water then fill it back up with anti freeze aswell put heaters on full and leave expansion tank lid off for a while whilst ticking over then you should be problem solved, hope that helps mate

oh also check your fuse for the fan!:rockwoot:

Ever had your water pump done?

If not its probably that, the impellor starts to go sometimes round the centre spindle

i agree but id try the cheaper option of what i said first lol maybe its just me being a cheapskate lol:o.k:

forgot to say the seemed to be a fair bit of pressure in the top pipe coming from the rad, to be honest i thought it might of been the stat, maybe not

i had the temp sensor changed about 3 weeks ago,not sure about the water pump only had the car 4 months

i tried to find the fuse for the fan but in the book it don't say which one it is

Only thing with that is you dont wanna be boiling half the system more times than you need too, unusual to get an airlock unless the hose has been changed or its been run dry

How many miles has the car done?

when you take off the fuse box cover on the drivers side of the dash theres little pictures if i remember rightly if not there numberd so have a look there ;-)

iv had a look mate there's no pictures they are numberd but i couldnt find the number in the hand book so didnt know which fuse to check

Not sure on the stat, last time my pump went I thought it was the stat so changed that only to find it was the pump, spindle and impellor looked ok but wasnt. Bear in mind theres nothing to push the water around so the pipe lower down wont get hot

Also, the fan not coming on could be dependant on where the temp switch is, if its after the water pump then it wont be reconising it as hot enough to come on, hence not a fuse issue

that makes sence mate how much is it to have the pump changed, will i need to have the timming belt done as well

thanks guys

Dont take that as gospel, just experience and what I came into finding when I worked for VW

Id advise getting your belt done at the same time as they have to come off anyway, best to not refit them really!

you a fitter are you mate, is there any way i can check if its the water pump

I was before I left there

No way I know of really that taking the belt etc off and popping the unit out, maybe someone else has another idea on how you could tho

i agree, id never fit an old pump or belt back on, peace of mind for hardly any cost,

water pump almost certain. CHeck your header coolant tank to see if there are tiny tiny little black flecks floating on top of coolant.......if so, that is the plastic starting to degrade and impellor failure is next, (or happened).

have it done quick, without water circulating properly, even though you have not lost coolant, your are cooking your block and it could prove costly very quickly!!

I've discovered that nearly all overheating problems on the 1.8T engines turn out to be a bad water pump.
