a coupe of months ago my APY S3 started shuddering and the engine management light came on.

I took it to audi and a coil pack had gone so they fixed it.

I was nearing my house tonight and the exact same thing happened again.

I realise its a coil pack, but how do i find out which one? Id like to fix it myself as im told its very easy to do.

Is there a way to find out which one is faulty without using vag com?

Thanks in advance :)

P.s i say its an APY from memory but cant be 100% sure. Its a 2000 model 210bhp

sure, just use usual comon sense and process of elimination.

Pull out each coilpack in turn. If you pull out a good coilpack, then it will become even worse. You'll know which one's the bad one because when you pull it, it'll be no different to when it was plugged in. You can then test this by swapping locations of the bad and good packs, and seeing if the fault follows the bad coilpack.

Personally, I wouldn't. I've had enough electric shocks from HT leads for my liking.

so i need to disconnect them one by one, turning the engine off in between then if i get what your saying?

yep. pull 1, start car. Providing that 1 coilpack is definitely broken, if you pull a good coilpack then the engine probably wont start or keep running.

what you are looking for is the case where the engine runs just the same with or without the suspected coilpack plugged in.

you are a legend, thanks a lot.

Sorry if i sound like a n00b but thats exactly what i am!

haha

just purchase one new coil pack & exchange each current coil pack one at a time until you ve found the faulty one.

right i have a new genuine coilpack in my hand, all i need to do now is put lots of clothes on and try it!

will let you know how i get on.

shame the dude at audi gave me completely the wrong part.

nothing like what is fitted already. Gonna have to give in and take it to audi as i cant be without my car at work any longer.

i have previously stated that i wasnt 100% on the engine code. It is stamped on the block AMK so this is what i told the parts bloke, the new coil i got needs to be bolted into place whereas the one i took out just pushes in and seats itself.

gutted!

on the block? Normally there is a sticker on the timing belt cover. Have a look on there.

just checked on the hpi report from when i got the car and the engine code is AMK on there too
