I've got under the car and tried pushing in the buttons with a flat head screwdriver whilst wiggling and pulling the connector in closer to the filter. There doesn't seem to be any real movement of the button.

No luck so far and put off by the idea of snapping old plastic. Is there a trick to it I'm missing?

I remember struggling with this a bit too and the fear of breaking fuel line connectors was real ;-)

I think what worked for me was pushing the connector towards the pump first, then pushing the plastic clip (button) and then start pulling the connector off the filter. You've probably done that but I thought I'd mention it ...
Good luck !

For onlookers, here is a decent video on how to replace the fuel filter on A3 8P.

Cheers,

Cheers! As you said tried it already but no luck.
I also read that it's easier when it's hot so good luck getting it done soon!

I haven't tried again yet but will get the garage to change it next time I'm down that way.
I don't wanna risk fuel lines breaking on the drive and couldn't work it out.
