Hi folks
I’m looking at buying a facelift s3 8v with the 7spd dsg gearbox.
I want to know what it’s like on motorways cruising at higher speeds of say 90mph?
does it feel effortless?
whats the rpm @ 90mph?
is there much engine noise?
what mpg could I expect at this speed?

Ive read the s3 is better sound insulated and has a more refined ride then the BMW m140i so that’s why I’m leaning towards it.

I reckon euro 6 diesels owners will start getting penalised when the next euro 7 emmissions standards are released in 2024 so I really want a petrol with performance and decent fuel economy hence why I’m looking at an s3

I find my 2018 S3 with the 7-speed completely effortless at motorway speeds. A 70mph cruise is just over 2,000rpm.

Perhaps with a different driving style to yours at a 65mph cruise, I get over 50mpg indicated on long business trips. Overall mpg is closer to 35, though I am mostly sensible these days so yours may be lower.

For best noise, go for 2017-18 "sweet spot" S3 with facelift, 310PS, no OPF and 7-speed DSG. It sounds excellent inside and out, though some of it is enhanced by exhaust valving and speakers.

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

I’m almost always at 90-100mph (when on autobahns of course)
Any idea of mpg / cabin experience at these speeds?

Agree with The Cardinal. I don’t drive at 90-100 so can’t comment on that part of your post. 70 is only just fast enough for 7th gear but returns 40-42mpg. At 70 in 7th it’s just starting to wake up.

At 90-100 you'll be looking at low 30s to high 20s respectively. I usually do an indicated 78 (doesn't trigger cameras) on motorways with the cruise control on and that typically returns 36, or a little more on a hot day. As others have said at 70 or less then low 40s and above is about right.

It's hilariously effortless at motorway speeds. I've driven mine on Autobahns and even at 100-120mph, the pick-up in 4th/5th is fantastic and really aids progress.

The only slightly irritating thing to be aware of is, if in sport mode, the gearbox will hunt between 6th and 7th a lot. It will settle into 7th at cruising speeds but the slightest touch of the accelerator or an incline etc will see it changing down to 6th, then back to 7th and so forth. Not a big problem as I tend to leave it in 'D' whilst cruising on the motorway and use the paddles for 'temporary manual' when needed.

What do you mean diesel owners will be penalised?

What do you mean diesel owners will be penalised?

In clean air zones which currently operate in London, Birmingham and other big cities, diesels which don’t meet euro 6 emissions regs (generally cars before 2015-2016) get charged £8-£12 every time they enter the zone.

I think this will shortly be changed to fine diesels which don’t meet euro7 emission regulations. So all current diesels including those which meet euro 6 regs will be fined when entering the clean air zone

Aaah got ya... So I went few time to london to embassy so that doesn't count? it only counts who lives there?

I think residents living in the clean air zone can apply for an exemption. Otherwise it applies to everyone, the only exempt cars are:
diesels which are euro 6 (2015 onwards)
petrols which are euro 4 (2006 onwards)
electric cars

If you own a car older then the above you will be charged £8-£12 depending on city
