Hello picked up the car last week and loving it so far. Touch wood I do not seem to be suffering from the know gremlins others are encountering but I do have 1 issue.
I am having trouble trying to connect my wife’s android phone to allow her to use android auto. The phone has established a Bluetooth connection for phone calls no problem but when I connect it via usb the auto app starts up but then comes up with a communication error 11. I have tried a couple of different cables that I have but to no avail. It worked fine in the golf I had. Checked software versions and al seems ok. Any ideas?

Clean the cached data of Android Auto in your phone and then try to connect to your car. The phone should show you multiple prompts as if your're connecting it for first time. It should re-create the cache for your new car.

Hi any further help would be appreciated as I am still struggling. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app, changed loads of different settings on both car and android auto. The phone is running android 10. I’ve tried 2 cables both with the same result. I purchased a new cable after I got the car (Ugreen 90 deg) usb-c at both ends. It transfers data but not video apparently but one Amazon review did state it worked on auto. What Cable are you guys using?
Ive searched the internet and cannot find a definitive answer for communication error 11.
The car goes shows android auto on the Home Screen once you have selected the phone which makes me think the cable is ok.
This is starting to do my head in as I am usually good at figuring these type of issues out!

Is your car 2 x USB-C or 1 USB-A and 1 USB-C? Any differences on either USB? Likewise I just got my car a couple of days ago, no electrical gremlins yet, but I may not encounter any as I never had or will use Android Auto. I'm old school that way! I will just use the car's inbuilt nav and music via usb drive into the left USB. Mine is 2 x USB-C.

Only apple car play as far as I am aware.
Have you tried resetting the the audi smartphone interface back to factory or restarting the phone or making sure the Iphone cable is disconnected? If you're not sure how to reset back to factory settings this should help.

Hi I have the 2 usb-c’s as per all the latest factory cars.
TBH I do not want to carry out a factory reset as everything else is working smoothly and this would have to be a last resort. I heard too many stories on here about MMI issues and do not want chance more issues with a reset.
my next plan was to try another phone but the rest of my immediate family are all iPhone users so I will have to wait until I probably get back to work and ask a work colleague if I can try their phone. Also I would like a try a known cable that works on our cars.

To the OP: Do you keep your phone unlocked when plugging in and while it's making the connection?

I noticed, if I plug it in while my phone is locked, it keeps trying to start AA but keeps failing.

TBH I do not know but I definitely know I’ve tried it locked. Will try it unlocked. I am unfamiliar with android as I use an iPhone and this is my wife’s phone that I was just trying to set up for her. When I plug it in I get an option of how I would like it to connect (charge only, transfer photos and transfer files) or the option to cancel. What do you press or goes this only come up on the Lock Screen?

I select file transfer on that screen. (You can change the default on USB configuration on your phone, so when this pops up, file transfer will be already selected. )
You may see this screen more than once though and do the same on all screens. Also don't forget to install any AA update on your phone in Google Playstore.

Does anyone know if the 8Ys have wireless Android Auto?

I've selected wireless AA on my phone but my 21 plate A3 with all the up-to-date software still doesn't sync wirelessly.

However, while it's currently in the garage they've given me a brand new Q3 S Line which appears to have the same MMI system as mine yet this car does have wireless Android Auto.

Do you have to pay for this as an option or is it a software update?

I don't think 8Y has wireless Android Auto or at least it never worked wirelessly in mine. I don't know if there's a software update to enable it. But if anyone can confirm it's possible, I'll start chasing my dealer for an update.

I'm waiting on the dealer confirming this but it would be annoying that what appears to be such a simple thing cannot be standard in a new A3 when it's in the Q3 of a similar spec.

However, what is unacceptable is this decently specced, brand new, 21 plate, £40k Q3 has an ignition, flip out key and no stop/start button or electric mirrors?!?!?

Feels quite basic compared to a similarly specced A3. What were they thinking at Audi when they were deciding on UK spec sheets?

I believe the specs are decided by previous model's sales figures. Most people who bought this pretend SUV really didn't care about any of those options.

Can any of you kind chaps please give me the details of the usb-c (both ends) cable you are using for android auto so I can purchase a known working cable to try and elevate the communication issue I am currently suffering.

This is the cable I'm using - Amazon

I don’t believe this. This is the cable I purchased. I sent an email to the manufacturer asking if it was compatible because of the issues I am suffering and they replied this morning that there “might be a compatibility issue”.
I have since been onto the android auto website and ordered a cable recommended by them.
so at the moment I either have a suspect cable or another issue either phone or car related.
p.s. thanks for the reply!

I spoke to a technician today when I collected my car. He says the A3 MMI in particular is problematic and has a number of compatability issues revolving around certain phones, cables and software versions. He says that his Chinese android phone won't connect by Bluetooth to his 21 plate A3 yet it will work in other cars.

With regards to the A3 having wireless Android Auto - it doesn't. The same technician sat with me for 30 minutes trying different ways to make it connect wirelessly but it wasn't having any of it. He believes this is a software issue rather than hardware and could be installed in a future update. This was despite my car being a 21 plate and having the latest software and being similar in age/spec to a Q3 courtesy car that does have wireless Android Auto. He seemed to suggest the A3 was buggy as hell without actually saying it.

New cable arrived today so have it a try and guess what, no difference! This was an android auto certified cable. I did not expect it to work after Sal Jam’s cable was the same as the original I tried.
I had a mess about in the developer menu and did notice something which I think is contributing to the problem. When you select the function for the usb it goes from file transfer to charge only and the connection is then lost.
can someone who has no issues please check this for me to see if I am thinking along the right lines. Also does anyone know if there is a way to force the connection to stay on file transfer?
I have read recently that there is a lot of problems with android auto and Huawei phones since the upgrade to android 10. I think I am a victim of this.

Would appear you need a phone running Android 11

Como se llamo esto i am from SPAIN.

I registered a lot time ago. Can i see this web without adblocer?

thanks )

I've not had any problems connecting my Huawei phone running EMUI 11 (Android 10 based).

Have you paired the phone via bluetooth first? As I think that's necessary. Also, I'm connecting to the left hand USB port (not sure if both work for Android Auto as I haven't tried the right hand one. Both my ports are USB-C

Mine is a chepo chinese phone with Android 11 and MIUI 12.

IMO, if I were in your pos, I would've tried a different phone. If it still doesn't work, then it'd be dealer time I'm afraid.

It is a Huawei P30 lite running android 10.0.0.470 (C431E14R2P7) EMUI 10 and auto version 6.6.612534. I have checked for updates to the operating system and the phone is showing as up to date.
The connection is fine through Bluetooth with no issues making calls and streaming music through Bluetooth audio it is just AA.
Everyone I know has an iPhone or a android phone but not with usb-c connection so I do not have a cable compatible at both ends so I cannot try another phone which would be an easy way to tell if it is the phone or car.

Hello just am update of where I am. I have been to the in-laws today and tried the mother-in-laws phone which is identical to my wife’s and exactly the same issue. Tried her husband’s which is a Samsung and all worked ok. Tried both my cables and both working. He is running android 11 where the other phones are android 10. At least I know it is not the car and something to do with the phone.

Have you tried going to the android auto app and signing up as a beta user. A new update dropped a few days ago which may help.

Ver 6.8.113114

Not sure how far to go with this. At the minute I am glad that it is not a car issue. My wife does not use AA that often only to stream Amazon music but she can do that over Bluetooth anyway. It seems a big issue with Huawei phones and android 10 when you search the net.

Sorry meant the play store, search android auto and you can opt to be a beta (halfway down the page).

Just upgraded to AA 6.7 (not Beta), first impression is: connection after plugging in the phone appears to be snappier.

Just checked the wife’s phone and she has received the update but trying the phone it would still not connect.

Just to confuse things further, today I tried my wife’s phone in her sisters Kia X Ceed and the phone connected no problem to android auto. So now when I had convinced myself it was a compatibility issue and the phone was at fault, it now could be a compatibility issue with the car being the issue. Like I said previously her phone worked in the golf we just got rid of.
I know that if I contact Audi they will blame Huawei and if I contact Huawei they will blame Audi. Looks like I am in a stalemate situation with no means of a solution!
