hi all,

Prospective RS3 owner very soon....one thing I’ve been made aware to look out for is brake issues on the prefl rs3. Is it just they squeak or are they rubbish?

If so what is the actual solution to this issue?

Thanks

Wavy discs can "judder" and OE pads can squeal. I swapped the lot out but perhaps extreme ;) change to round discs and non OE pads seems to sort it too.

I put EBC yellows on my rear in my golf R and they seem to squeak, I just turn the stereo up. And with a 5 pot, I won’t even need to turn the stereo up! So squeal wouldn’t bother me. The judder might, I’m sure I could find some nearly as aesthetically pleasing discs from elsewhere without them being wavy, maybe vagbremtechnic could sort me out..

Many threads on this. Squeak is an easy fix with Ferodo DS pads. See thread on here.

It will bother you, it is a squeak like you never heard before, and not engine sound or music will mute it because it occurs very loudly when you are coming to a stop (no engine sound). I replaced to restuff pads and the noise is gone, but from what I read here the performance is not very good.

Possible to use yellowstuff too? I’ve heard ds2500 aren’t too great from cold. I assume it is just the fronts which do this?

What do you know about disk judder?

You might not get it. Ive had mine a few weeks now, brakes are fantastic compared to my s3. Only had slight squeak so far when braking lightly

I’ve got DS2500 on the rear and DS Performance on the front as the rear option wasn’t available at that time. Both are excellent IMO.

I’ve not had the judder so can’t really comment. I think overheating on Oem pads is probably the cause. Keep them holes clear.

Have this issue with my PFL RS3 and it’s driving me nuts. Are the Ferodo pads a solid fix? Audi don’t want to know - say it’s part and parcel of owning an Rs3.

I swapped recently to brembo pads from the red stuffs as these were getting quite low. Seem fine at the moment, abit more brake dust than the reds but I can live with that. No squeal thus far and £65 for the front set so good on price.
I'm still on the original front wavy discs. Car is now at 55k.
Performance wise they seem fine. They stop the car, bonus . I'm only a couple of hundred miles in so far, buy so far so good. Fitted these to the rears as again my red stuffs in this instance were absolutely shot.

That’s quite a price difference from the Ferodo pads - which I’m seeing on Ebay for c.£140 for a set of pads for the front.
Given I won’t be horsing my RS around a track any time soon, or perhaps ever, I wouldn’t be averse to going with the Brembos if the only difference was a bit of extra dust. Although I’m not sure they are any worse performance wise than the OEM pads? Did you have squealing issues with the OEM pads before you changed to the reds?

I too have the wavy discs. I wonder if they contribute to the issue of squealing. My brakes don’t do it all the time at low speed, though I would say about 80% of the time. And when it happens it’s seriously loud. Highly embarrassing when pulling up to lights or trying to park! Lol.

I put my original audi pads back in my car when I did a trackday in it as I was told the reds would be suicidal.
The oem pads squealed awfully but so far I've had no squeal from these brembo ones nor my red stuff ones.
Like a lot of things with this car, some people get the dreaded brake squeal others don't.
I know a few members on here swear by the ferrodo ds2500's and they do both track driving and road along with the torrix discs and they have nothing but praise for this setup.

The Ferodo pads are fine but you need the right shims that wrap around the lobes to ensure the backing plate is the right size and you get no squeal. I had mine fitted without but had to get some on.

Spoke with Trevor last week when ordering the DS performance pads, and he thinks the shims are only needed for the facelift not the Pfl ,I’ve ordered em them anyways just in case …we’re see when I Get em fitted …. I’ve gone with the Reyland Disks for the front which came last week can’t praise Reyland up enough for being ultra helpful on the subject as well as Sean on this forum.

Why did you change the discs out of interest?

Mine are still the Audi wavy ones, can’t stand the noise now plus they’ve now got small step in so was a no brainer really to put back on a quality set Discs that’s been tried and tested couldn’t see the point of spending ££££ for the oem disks only to faced with same problems..
