Just went out to the shops to get some supplies for the house and saw 3 BMWs stuck going up a very small hill. I mean *** why are these idiots going out in a rwd in the snow most likely on summer tyres!?!
I’m on winters with awd and I’m thinking twice before going out. Wouldn’t have went out if we weren’t running out of food.
On another note the a6 torsion Quattro I had previously was better than the haldex Quattro in the heavy thick snow. S3 isn’t bad but same condition I felt the a6 was a lot more stable.

Why, because people who drive rear wheel drive cars no better :whistle2:
I agree with you though, unless it’s for essential stuff/emergency then I’m not going out. TBF I only live 500 yards from a Co-op, problem is getting to work but it’s 4miles away so can walk it.

Torsen better than Haldex.
That said, in the winters before lockdown I used to play ‘Merc/BMW in ditch’ bingo on my way into work. I think it was 2018 when we had snow and traffic jam on a large dip and rise in the road. I got out, spoke to the person behind and said I’ll wait till I can do it in one go. Cue a 4x4 overtake and crawl to the bottom and unable to get up the other side. How we laughed! Yes I did it in one go passing the 4x4 with 2WD.

2018 was the beast from the east.
I had to go out and rescue my wife’s mate who got his Land Rover stuck in a snow drift in my a6:wink:

Funny enough, I got stuck in my A6 in 2018. HAD to go to the vet to fetch my dog post surgery, and managed to beach on snow drift in a dip in lane just down the way from us. I hadn’t realised depth or softness. Some shovelling for the next 45 mins saw us get it out and no further issue. Cue a change to Q5 a few months later, and winters on next winter. Unstoppable, but beast from east was long gone

Jan 2018 I was coming across country back from a funeral in Norfolk in my Yeti on winter tyres. On the M62 I could feel the conditions change and light slow started to fall. I slowed down but others did not. Within a few miles I saw 3 Mercs and BMW's that had passed me crashed into the central barrier and another on the opposite carriageway. My early thoughts about swapping to a rear wheel drive went out of the window.

mate has a rwd with winters and he gets by fine.
Remember old rally cars were all rwd. It’s the tyres that makes the biggest difference not how many wheels you drive.

I don't think its about the cars, I think its about educating people and making them aware of conditions. People think tires are tires, just rubber and compounds don't exist. My 72yr old dad who has had millions of cars and works on them himself thinks this still even after me rambling on at him! It should be included in the driving test perhaps? They get people to go out and point to the oil cap so why not educate them on tires and safety. So many accidents would be avoided this way if we had clear advice. Also down to the climate of the UK, most of the year the UK (or England and lower Wales I guess) mostly has weather that is ok for summer tires so people can't justify the cost. Then when a snow storm comes along they get all confident and blaze about the grip as they aren't educated I guess.

My dad is the same. Thankfully, my mum listened to reason and they now have Michelin Crossclimate+ tyres on their Merc. The tyres cost about 50% more will last much better and have 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake certification.

Dad said to mum recently to be careful going down the drive in case she lost control on the snow and hit the gates.

If you have driven on winter tyres then you should know that these people are using summer tyres. My dad said the Merc C220 was the worst car he had ever driven on snow. Then he complained at the cost of new Michelin Crossclimate+ tyres for the car.

I know a woman who changed her A4 after 1 year, for a 4x4 Sportage because the A4 was so bad in the snow. The 4x4 probably had M&S tyres so it would have been better.

Well it seems snow brings out the stupid in folk not just beemer drivers.
Just went out to the park for some sledging and saw a Vauxhall insignia trying to do an odd turn into a different section of the car park where all the snow was shovelled and manage to beach himself on a pile of snow. If he kept his original trajectory he would have been able to do a u turn in the car park, it’s that ****** wide! Then for 15 minutes he just kept revving the car and essentially polishing the ice underneath so he could get stuck some more with his wife looking less and less impressed in the passenger seat
Would have offered to help but was too busy keeping an eye on the kids and didn’t feel like rewarding stupid.

Had it been a known 'Dogging' car park then he would have had plenty of help pushing him out...:whistle2:

Very true.

When we were young my father stressed to us not to scrimp on tyres or brakes, and I have kept that view (have since added oil to that list too). My sister’s first car came with remoulds which were replaced sharp-ish.

In the UK we don’t live with harsh weather often enough to adapt - the first snow of a winter is always carnage, but to be fair the same applies in Europe in the years the snow comes before the government declared tyre change date.

A lot of people are too confident/arrogant in their own skill / too dependent on ABS/ESP etc when in those situations the weakest link is mechanical grip. You can’t dial out stupid.

Agree most people can’t justify the cost of winter tyres. Cross Climates are well suited for the wet UK winter with frost and occasional snow, assuming not on a performance car as they’d It only comprise a summer spirited drive but would cook.

Winter tyres don’t turn winter into summer.

agree, education is the best way forward even testing on a skid pan as part of the practical test.
I can still remember my driving test was cancelled cause of snow. I argued with dvla saying are they going to guarantee it didn’t snow after my test. Surely if I can pass in the snow I can drive in any weather. They basically told me to f-off and come back in 2 months which was hell for a 17 year old.

Passing your test is the start of a journey of learning, not the end. The 6th sense of incoming tw*tdom bearing down on you takes more time, as does the ‘always have an escape space’

Have done rallying courses and a skid pan experiences. They taught me a lot about grip, controlling skids and the benefits of pushing weight forward/back in specific situations.

In no way do these make me an expert and I can still screw up- Just a way to hopefully spot earlier that things are going wrong and possibly regain control when they go awry.

Well a bit of sunshine and the idiots were out in force today. Beemer stuck at entrance of street and in effect caused everyone else to get stuck.
I got really peed off as was running late to an appointment so drove past them all and waved
Later 2 removal trucks got stuck in the same area. You can see from a mile away there was a couple of inches of snow and ice ***. Why do they even try?The smart buggers in the street have parked their cars in the main road where it’s well ploughed and gritted not in a small side street which doesn’t see grit or much sunshine for that matter
