So I've had the A4 40 tfsi black edition in white with s-tronic gearbox and comfort and sound pack since March and only covered around 6k miles but I thought I would post a review.

For the engine the overall impression is of utter smoothness and refinement. The performance is more than adequate, Audi reckon 7.3 to 60mph, I've clocked it in dry conditions in just under 7 seconds. Economy is impressive for a petrol with overall 41.4 although it has dropped a bit now the ambient temperature has dropped. You get a bit of tyre roar depending on the surface on those 19 wheels but generally the engine is absolutely silent, it pulls away like an electric.

The auto gearbox is superb but it does lag. I usually leave it in economy mode and to counter the lag drop it to sports mode with a flick of the shifter for roundabouts or junctions to give it a bit more urgency. Considering this has the sports suspension it feels very smooth, you can feel the surface but it's not harsh or noisy in any way, it's very supple. The grip feels good, I'm not one to push it to the limits but it's enjoyable and confident enough to drive quickly on a twisty road.

Build quality impressive, no rattles or squeaks and I love the Google maps display and virtual cockpit. Night time driving is good with the LED lights working well with assist, I can imagine the full matrix are impressive. The interior LED package makes it feel very plush. The B&O sound system I was initially a little underwhelmed but it's grown on me, it's good. One thing that has surprised me is the comfort of the seats and the usefulness of the all around camera as opposed to just a rear view camera.

Mine is a lease and to get it for a shade over £300 a month on 8k miles a year for 4 years it's been a good move, I suppose I'm lucky living in a low tier area (although that has changed as I type) I can get out, so I don't need much of an excuse to get out and have a drive and I've never tired of it.

Thanks for the review.

Interested to hear about this engine, I'm due to take delivery of a 40TFSI Black Edition + C&S in March and coming from the 190TDI was worried I'll miss the low down torque. I might yet but I'll see. Wasn't able to test drive one locally due to lockdown.

Great review, I would agree on the points you mentioned.

Seats are supportive, however I’ve missed the space an A6 Would give.

What car did you come from for reference?
What sort of driving achieved 40mpg?

Yes a very good review, I concur with all the points raised even with my older version..

Glad to hear your review, and sounds like you made the right move with getting a 40 TFSI. I’ve got one on order, and the real world economy has been my biggest fear, but an average of 41mpg is OK to me. I would suggest this will improve when the warmer weather returns!

Totally agree with what you say as I’m in exactly the same boat! I did get to drive an A5 40 TFSI, but it was the older 190hp version, but it gave me a good idea of what to expect.

OP, happy to hear that you're pleased with your 40 TFSI. Unfortunately my experience was the opposite. Having only ever owned diesels, I bought my first ever petrol car (brand new) in 2018 - A4 Avant Black Edition 2.0 TFSI 190. Loved the interior and the overall build quality of the car, but hated the engine. Badly missed the torque of the diesels, but more importantly was getting very poor fuel economy - typical MPG was 30-35 despite not driving around like a boy racer. I got rid of the car 6 months later and earlier this year, bought an A6 C8 Avant, 40 TDI Quattro. I am now getting around 45 MPG on the A6 and can easily get 600+ miles out of the tank, though admittedly the A6 has a slightly bigger fuel tank. The almost shocking thing is, that the 40 TDI engine is just as refined as the 40 TFSI engine, they both feel very quiet.

Leasing out of warrenty always seems an odd idea to me, unless you've got extended warrenty of course

Cuke, what's the long term average on your car?
I only read the short term mpg as all my journey's tend to be short. I can have a look at the long term mpg on Monday when I finally get to drive again..

Nice write up thanks. I've got a 35TDI on order but tried only the 35TFSI (150ps) and the 45TFSI quattro. Loved the 45 but good lease offers were simply not available and total cost was just about DOUBLE the 35TDI and 35TFSI back in June. 35 TFSI was weak compared to the 35 TDI but the 45 was a different beast, S4 junior IMHO and all the car I'd need on UK roads but I couldn't turn down the diesel offer.

Torquer, out of interest is that mpg brim to brim or computer? How many miles do you get out of a tank? My old diesel averaged 52 over 30000 miles but the computer was rather more flattering than that, averaging well over 55 during the same 30000 miles and often on a long journey showing 65+ when I knew it wasn't.

Agree with everything you say about the interior and the comfort and the seats and the dash and the sound. My old Sport had those wallowy SE springs that my 90 year old dad would have liked, but I prefer the precision of the stiffer set up. Even comfort wise it is less prone to inducing car sickness and feels far more planted when pushing along briskly.

As for the B & O, I had similar experiences in my A5. The dealer said the speakers, even the Amps, needed running-in! My first thought was B-S but I googled it and turns out he was right, they do settle and improve markedly according to the audiofiles. Even to my war damaged lug-holes I noticed a significant improvement in the first few months.
