Hi all,

Today I have installed a flat bottom MFSW & cruise control into my 2007 Audi S3. After getting everything back together, and using the various helpful guides that I've found with regards to coding, I'm having an issue where I CANNOT for the life of me get the ESP fault warning to disappear, and the steering is super heavy.

Just for posterity, the car had a non multi function 3 spoke steering wheel before hand, mid-line controller and obviously no cruise control. There was obviously no ESP warnings or anything on the car before I started the work, all was working fine.

I then sourced the flat bottom wheel, new circular airbag & harness, new squib ring, a new controller module with part code (8P0953549F), the indicator/cruise control stalk & lower fascia.

During fitting, I fitted all the new parts except the squib ring which came with my new FBSW, because it had the same part code (ending in 'D') that the S3 already had on there, same number of pins, etc. I thought if the existing one was working, then it probably wasn't worth replacing. I'm wondering if this is the source of my headache but thought I would post up here before I rip everything back out to change it.

I have obviously done the coding to update the car with the MFSW and cruise. The MFSW does indeed work with the controls doing what they are meant to, and I haven't fully tested cruise yet but I can see the controls trigger in VCDS whilst inspecting using measuring blocks.

I've tried multiple times to do the steering wheel lock to lock thing, drive slowly down the road, but the G85 sensor just doesn't seem to want to play ball. If I go into the ABS settings and look in there at measuring blocks, I do notice the steering angle is set to 0 degrees and doesn't change even when turning the wheel.

I did notice under the steering wheel settings I am getting the following error;

01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded
000 - - - Intermittent

Do I need to do any form of coding to get the new control module to work? Unsure what this could mean and I can't really find anything which says that it needs to be.

I've attached my VCDS logs below, if anybody could perhaps point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.

Many thanks,

Tony

Hi just a quick one but what was the year of the car the steering wheel electrics from? Just thinking it’s probably a coding issue as from a certain year they moved G85 to the steering rack so if your current controller is set incorrectly that’ll be why G85 isn’t reading properly I can’t for the life of me remember what value it is that needs checking but I’ll post again in the morning I’m on nights at the mo. But double check the adaption channels is 44 (steering rack) just to be safe.

You can also check than the module is in good condition.
When I did the same retrofit, I bought a module from eBay and some of the pins were missing so I didn't have airbags after the installation.
Check the picture in this post.

Hi mate, thanks for the reply. The steering module that I installed was supposedly from a 2008 1.4 A3 TFSI. I'll check the adaption channel shortly, but if you can check the value as well, I would appreciate it.

I did check the pins on the new module before fitting and all seemed okay, but you are right it is a used module so perhaps it could have a fault. It was sold as fully working from a VAG breakers though. Many thanks.

I will check the value in the morning, it should be ok but just to give a bit of warning this is the state of my motor at the minute lol

So you finally begon the BCM swap?

Yeah man I started it about 4-5 weeks ago but works gone crazy so I’ve only had a an hour or so a day. Also while I was there I thought I’d convert the airbag from single stage to dual. I powered it up the other day and it’s looking good so far

Are going to update progress pics in your BCM topic? Im curious how it is progressing

Hi all,

I just wanted to quickly update everybody with some good news.

I went outside this morning with the intention of ripping everything back out and changing the squib ring, and decided to have another last ditch effort checking the settings in VCDS. Cleared all the codes, and they came straight back.

I jumped into the 'Steering Wheel' settings in VCDS and noticed 2 things. One was that I had the setting for 'no rear wiper' enabled whereas my car does have a rear wiper, so I changed that. Also my steering wheel was set to 'MFSW with Telephone control'. My car does have no telephone connectivity, so I changed the setting from '3' to '2' in there to JUST multi function wheel and hey presto, the '01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded' warning disappeared. Turned off the car, waited a few minutes and then turned back on and the error did not return, but did still get the ESP warning flash up.

I then pulled the car into my cul de sac, did the <20km/h drive about 30 feet down the road, went lock to lock on the steering wheel. I could then see steering angle being recorded in the ABS measuring blocks under setting '004'. Pulled the car on the drive, did the 'steering stop limit adaptation' process, all the lights went out. Turned off the car for a few minutes, back on again and no lights, and I have power steering again :)

Took the car for a 10 minute drive, no lights, all good and my cruise control is working splendidly too!

I'll try and get an S3 emblem for the wheel at some point :D

Many thanks for your help with this.

Tony

Hi,

Thought I'd jump on this thread rather than creating a fresh one

I have an 08 A3. Just fitted the cruise control, MFSW wheel and updated steering control module (8p0 953 549 f).

Steering angle sensor is 1k0 959 653 d which I believe is the right one .

Not coded the cruise in yet but the MFSW works weirdly.

I have no power steering and the ESP light on. The turn left and right and drive forward hasn't cleared the fault or bought the PAS back so I'm guessing the control module needs coding in?

Is there something specific I need to select in the coding to bring it back or recognise the new steering module or will the PAS come back as I code everything in?

I'm east mids based if anyone local is able to help.

Cheers.

Is anyone able to help with the above at all?

More just trying to understand if there is something with the steering control module that needs coding in to bring the power steering back?

Cheers

Hi mate, in my instance it turned out just my steering wheel wasn't coded correctly and I had to change it from MFSW with telephone control to just the regular old MFSW. I didn't have to change any of the steering control module settings in VCDS or anything like that in the end. All your part codes look okay to me as well, and are the same as what I used. I have a spare steering angle sensor if you wanted me to send that up to you just in case? Dunno if you have IG but my handle on there is the same as my username here, might be easier to message on there as I'll help you as best as I can.

For anybody that's randomly stumbling across this, I believe that all vehicles fitted with cruise control have the highline module (8P0953549F) and the correct clockspring fitted by default, meaning that the MFSW buttons upgrade is as simple as the buttons themselves and the airbag cable (plus reprogramming via VCDS).

Cheers. I'm going round to someone tomorrow to use their vagcom. Hopefully it's as easy as what you mentioned above for it to recognise the right settings to bring the PAS back.

I had issues with mine where I had to restore basic settings on my abs module before the power steering came back. This was after a long time with the battery disconnected.
When I fitted cruise I missed the coding on the engine despite seeing the stalk moving on vcds. Sorted it now

Managed to get this working last night.

Coded the cruise in fine.
Had to run the adaption to recognise the parameters on the steering. Turned wheel left 10 seconds, right 10 seconds, back to centre. Engine off, back to ignition. Drove around a little. Then did the left and right turn, drive forward a few times and in stages the PAS came back online and lights disappeared.
