So I have decided to upgrade my MIB Screen which is the smaller version.

I have decided to go for the bigger MIB1 screen rather than the MIB2 screen (don’t fancy spending over £1000!) and get one of the Apple car play kits.

Does anybody have a parts list & parts numbers for everything I would need to upgrade to the bigger MIB1 screen? (I take it it’s not just a case of swapping the screens over?)

Thanks in advance

Cannot just change screens unfortunately as your MIB1 standard only supports the 5.8" screen. If you are looking to retrofit a 7" then you need to also retrofit and MIB1 High or MIB2.

There might be a 3rd party upscaling device available to convert the MIB1 standard resolution but this is not something I have seen myself as yet.

Thanks. Yeah I suppose I will just have to go with the lower resolution screen with the MIB1 High as the cost to upgrade to the MIB2 is too much.

  • MIB1 Standard = 5.8” screen only
  • MIB1 High = 7” screen only
  • MIB2 Standard, High Scale and High = 7” screen only.

@DJAlix So I would just need the MIB1 High Screen and MMI to get it to work? Nothing else?
If you want to complete a factory style installation then you would need:
  • MIB1 High
  • 7” screen
  • MIB1 High Control Panel
  • Combined AMI and USB socket and related cables.
If you wanted a “working” solution then you can get away with:
  • MIB1 High
  • 7” Screen
No matter which way you go you will need to have your MIB1 high component protection removed and then unit activated before it will work.

Thanks for the useful info.
That definitely sounds above my level. I would pay someone to do that for me. Just need find somewhere local. Think there is a place in Leicester.

Can do this through my Leicester coding partner VAGPro

Oh really? That would be useful. Any idea of a cost?
I’m looking at getting one of the Apple car play units recommended on the A3 Owners Club page.
Best to call from Monday on 07950 737 899.

I don't understand.
How can you get a MIB1 high and a apple car play?
Don't the car play units have their own operating boxes?

Thats what I am not understanding
The OP has said since the start of the thread that he wants a MIB1 High unit, but on the very last thread says he wants a apple car play which are 2 different boxes.

And why I have requested a telephone call in order to find out true requirements, to advise and set expectations. Think I might have to know up an FAQ on this.

LOL Very true, lots of people asking about them.

So Alex how much does it cost to fit a apple play ?? Ha Ha

They are about $220.00 on Ali express which is where this unit came from so you save over half the price
This. The same, the exact same unit can be had from £184.00 on aliexpress.

That company above state that their units are made in the UK and tested here. And they come with the warranty and support and can’t be compared to the slow loading and poor build quality Chinese ones. That’s what they are stating anyway. Lot’s of good reviews on A3 Forums and poor reviews of the Chinese copies.

Rubbish! There are 3 or 4 different hardware versions of these units now, looms are the same for the most part but all are the same as units being sold via Aliexpress. I have installed enough of these types of units to know. The company in question might add their own support but they are not made in the UK, they are purchased from china, rebranded and sold on for an inflated price.

Integrated Automotive:

Imi 1000 front

Aliexpress example (top result of a generic search):

Hfb90ba39576a499cb66014c4bd13780dv

Ultimately its up to you on which you would like to purchase, just trying to give my professional advice based on my experience.

Well your professional advice is greatly appreciated as going by what other people say in forums isn’t fail safe or gospel. And I’ve never seen these in operation in person so all this advice helps. Thanks

So on your advice, I will go with one of the units from China. Do you have a link of the best place to buy from? I’ve never bought from any Chinese sites before.

@DJAlix Have you ever heard from this company?

Already in the UK already so don’t need to wait for a months delivery and custom charges:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/AUDI-Wir...-/133554524784?_trksid=p2349624.m46890.l49292
Don't know them. Delivery time seems a bit long for something that's already in the UK but you will have lots of protection via Ebay / PayPal and the price is not that much more then Aliexpress.

Re your other question, I don't have any specific links to these units as I don't supply them as there is no profit in the hardware for me. When people ask for examples I normally complete a fast search, cut and paste the result and 9 times out of 10 that's what people seem to purchase. Never had any installation issues with this type / shape of box:

S l1600

Going on experience I would avoid anything that looks like the following as they have always had issues:

I would not buy from them
Did you see one of their feedbacks.
Buyer said it kept shutting off when driving, the ebay seller said buyer installed it wrong, just blamed him, thats poor service
One negative out of lots of positive!
But at least there’s comeback unlike if you buy from Aliexpress. But as @DJAlix says, they will all be the same quality.

Well I’ve ordered the kit from Bavarian Automotive and I will install it at the same time as the footwell lights (as both require removal of the glovebox and MMI). I will let you know how I get on.

I’m very interested to hear your feedback once it’s been installed. I have a 2014 A3 and would like Car Play. That particular device is the one I’d install and if anyone else out there has one I’d be interested in their feedback too. My main concerns are 1. Does it change the quality of the sound 2. How responsive is it compared to Audi MMI which is slow 3. Is it compatible with Bose and 4. Does the display fill the screen. I have a 5.8” screen and I think I’m out unless unit makes full use of the screen size.

I received it today so will attempt to for this weekend. My concern also is whether it will effect sound quality as I have the B&O system.
I will keep you updated.
