Google Earth/Satellite Maps

That is good to hear. Do you know exactly what the update for the new maps is called. It might help future updaters ask for the right thing at the dealer.

There is a link to the (American) Service Bulletin on the equivalent thread on the A3 forum

Thanks for the info. Downloaded the bulletin. Hope my car is covered but it is coming up to 4 years old now.

Very good news, have you got any pictures of how the new maps look?

What was the cost of the update if you don't mind me asking.

Picture as below, one other noticeable change is that you lose the 3D mode as soon as you move the cursor away from the cars's location.

Looks good. My car stopped giving me Google earth view today. It just sits there spinning a wheel on the Google splash page.

I have contacted Audi Customer Services directly as the dealer I got the car from was not much help. Please to say that after supplying my VIN number they confirmed that my car can be updated. This will of course have to be completed by the dealer. It looks to me that Audi have not done much about contacting the dealer network as of yet. For the record my car is a 66 plate S4 Avant with MMI plus and Virtual cockpit.

You have the same year reg as mine so I'm assuming I can have this update as well. Do you know what the cost might be?

Just been into my local Audi and car is booked in next Tuesday. Did ask if there would be a cost and was told No. they were aware of the update but had not done many. My car is 67 S4 Avant.

I did ask about cost but Customer Services said the dealer would deal with it. Hopefully no charge. I think some dealers are more up to date than others. I got my car from Bedford Audi but I usually deal with Audi West London.

Cheers that looks decent, well better than having no option of an update anyway.

I also contacted dealer today as a double barreled request for a 16 digit code to register as the owner on my audi but also for the Google earth update. The later, the tech had no idea about but said he would fire a request to "Audi"

O yea I bought 17 plate S4 avant used from an independent dealer about a month ago so no 16 digit code. All connect licenses in date until June '21 other than Earth which says valid until end of this month however its already gone.

So I just popped into Cardiff Audi on way home from work and had a conversation with the service guys there and what they said is encouraging.
Firstly they haven’t fixed or updated any cars yet and they only became aware of the problem two weeks ago.
They aren’t yet updating any cars yet either - seems that there is an update/fix coming that will have been developed in-house by Audi to resolve the issue and give us back the imagery.
They expect that this fix / update will be rolled out from mid January and a campaign created then. he suggested phoning them in the first week or two of new year to check progress. Eventually all customers with affected cars would be contacted and offered the update.
Sounds like it’s likely to be a free update- they couldn’t see why they would charge for this service but they would need the car to physically update MMI. They seemed to imply that that all cars variants with google Earth overlays would or could be fixed.
So that’s the first bit of good news I’ve ever had from an Audi garage !
be patient guys - google maps is coming back !!!

I think they may be mistaken as;

a) The update is already been rolled out &
b) The TSB from the A3 thread shows limitations on which cars can and cannot be updated.

The TSB says that the overlay images now come from 'Here' maps rather than google so it is be possible that another update will revert back again but that seems to me to be unlikely.

The Audi American TSB?
Yea I think that's the one on the A3 forum.

I believe there are at least a couple of people on here who have had said update and its changed to satellite image overlays from 'maxar'

Fingers crossed the guys at Cardiff haven't got their wires crossed and we get the Google earth image back

Google Earth is definitely gone but has been replaced. Rollout is live in the UK dealers a few on here on the B9 forums have had the update installed. Problem is the dealers don’t seem to know much about it though, very shoddy customer service. Audi UK basically said to me dealers know all about it and when I spoke to them they didn’t have a clue.

Mines in tomorrow so I’ll update how it gets on. I haven’t got Google maps at all currently my license says expired despite everything else being valid and ‘live’.

Yes, Please let us know how you get on? Also, do you know how long it takes? Hopefully not too long, as my dealer are no longer offering courtesy cars, or any kind of lifts at all in the current climate. Basically leave your car and walk on your way!

A little annoying as the convenience factor of that is the part of why I pay more for the dealership experience (it's not the quality of work!) and my local back street garage I take my other runaround to is more than happy to still provide these services.

Thought for the day: that strip of sky in 3D mode - what were they thinking??

Yeah I’ll find out soon dropped the car off this morning at 8:30, said they’ll ring me if they have any issues. Lady on reception kept referring to it as a map update and I did say it wasn’t that it was to fix the Google maps display, otherwise they’ll be trying to charge me to update to 20/21 maps and not fix the actual issue!

That’s annoying about the courtesy car, my dealership is still offering them and has done it the whole time (JCT600 group) so I didn’t have any issues there only booked it in a week ago and usually there’s a longer wait for a slot with one but I’ve got a brand new A5 for the day until the works done.

I had that exact same misunderstanding about map updates despite using the word 'overlay' several times.

As an aside I have no idea why map updates can't continue to be via myaudi rather than dealer installed when yoyr allocation is up.

Quite, it is a overlay and a separate service, thus should not affect any current or future map updates.
Maps have to be activated to your vehicle thus it may be 'problematic' and a challenge to have the purchasing and installation of maps within 'MyAudi'....

Yeah although when I checked my maps the other day I think it is still showing as 17/18 update and I think you get 3 updates for free, so maybe they’ll do me a favour and update them at the same time too. As I don’t think the previous owner ever bothered to have it done.

Having said that about updating the maps once the 5 times is used up, on the USA AudiWorld forums there is a thread on updating the MMI firmware and also the maps.

Quick update - they’ve found the update that needs to be installed but apparently used approved warranty and extended manufacturers warranty (4 years) don’t cover it... so they want to charge me £60 to do it.

I’m ringing Audi UK now to find out if they’ll cover the cost as I don’t see why I should be charged for a service that they’ve stopped providing when the rest of my Audi connect services are ‘live’.

Mine was in on Monday i had asked the tech about the update ,he said id have to go to Audi digital,i told him I already had and they said it was down to the dealers,so I don’t know if its been done as mine stops on the 31/12/20

Final update and a happy resolution, got my car back and I now have the Satellite view again courtesy of Maxar Technologies apparently, although Google is still mentioned. Licenses page now says Satellite map though. I didn’t have Google Maps for a few months so I’m not the best person to ask for the differences but it looks good to me, no issues all my POI’s are still loaded etc.

Update took about 2 hours for the work, but my car was gone the whole day as the dealership originally wanted to charge me for the work, a £60 labour fee. I first contested this with Audi Connect Customer Services who were worse than useless, after telling me the previous week it would be free because my car was in warranty basically said tough suck it up and pay it or don’t use the services. So I went and raised a complaint with Audi UK’s main customer services and eventually got them to agree to cover the work under my 4 years extended manufacturers warranty, so the garage can submit a warranty claim against this and claim the labour. Used approved warranty wouldn’t have covered it apparently, no idea why. Although I did make a point of saying they shouldn’t be trying to charge people for a replacement service for something they’ve replaced, especially if people have valid licenses still! They said they’d feed that back up to the managers, doubt it’ll make any difference but I’ve tried.

Just enquired about this update at Eastbourne Audi, no surprises they knew nothing about this. However, they did say there was a campaign directive released on the 11th December for an update to the ECU. Which I will have the car booked in to have done next year...

Encouraging stuff guys - just need to follow up with my dealer after logging a complaint with Audi CS! I’m in my 4th year warranty so hopefully car argue for a free be. Just for info my car is an early MY2017 so based on above feedback should work

Ok so another conversation with CS and they are adamant my car cannot be updated as it’s not MIB2!
Just found the TSB so off to check my software

That TSB has confused me, my understanding was that MY changes happened around July time so a November 2017 build would be MY18 however the TSB implies that MY18 didn't start until May 2018.

Have I got that wrong?

No you are right, the article is Audi USA so might differ? I think it’s usual May , build week 22 for model year changes to start. My car was build at the start of 2017 so is a 2017 MY - if it was after May would’ve been 2018MY

Is there an easy way of checking which system your car has, I have a 17plate, first register in May of that year so assume MY17 S4 Avant with Nav plus.

My S5 was registered on the 1st March 17 so I’m guessing that was before build week 14 no?

I have a feeling that if you are able to run Apple Car play the system will be MIB2. Therefore update for Google will work, but seeing as dealers don't really know who am I to claim bragging rights. LOL

Could someone who’s had the update confirm their software version and if known what it was previously?
Thanks in advance
