C16 RKC's car ownership thread

A quick update:

The Audi went in for an MOT. The service was due in another month and a half, so I decided to just get it done af the same time.

Had service, Cambelt, Front disks and pads, water pump, MOT, upper and lower front bushes of some kind, and the Anti-roll bar bushes/links. I won't pretend to know what all these bushes do! The bill was a little over £1,360, but at least its lots of vital maintenance done.

The car feels so much better, so the bushes definately needed doing...

But I enquired about gearbox oil, as the car has done 146K miles. I was told the box is "sealed for life" so there is no need. I have had cars with the sealed boxes before, but I've usually been recommended to have the oil changed anyway, at around 100K intervals. Does anyone know if the oil can be changed in a 2010 2.0tdi autobox?

I enquired about changing the gearbox oil on my 3.0 TDI. The "sealed for life" box was ~£800 including filters and other bits that should be replaced. The oil was something silly like £40 a litre.

The 2.0 TDi C6s come with the Multitronic gearbox, basically a CVT gearbox. This gearbox is absolutely not "sealed for life". It had a bad reputation early on its life for failure and whilst that was resoved overtime the key to a long life for this box is a fluid chage every 38k miles. Not doing it will increase the potential for a very expensive failure

Thanks for this - I need to phone a gearbox specialist and arrange it. I'm pretty surprised a reputable specialist did not want to change the oil, but its even more surprising they did not know the gearbox - what you say actually makes sense of something for me; the service book has several stamps for a multitronic gearbox oil change!

Hi guys, hope everyone is well!

I have a new video, which details the purchase through restoration, to the current monkey business Aston has been getting up to. Thought some people might enjoy it?

I have been doing a lot of sideshows with our family photos, so I've gone a similar way with this, and you will all have to forgive me if there us a lot of personal content in this one... I was kind of making the video as a nice keepsake for us originally.

Hope you all enjoy!

Yes, it can be done. I’ve had it done, and it should be. Expensive though, think it was about £200.

Excellent thread by the way.

For your oil change, Midland VW near Cannock do it. Can’t recommend them enough.

Just a small update today.

It was nice weather, and Aston kept saying he wanted to go outside, so we decided to clean the daily workhorse. After all with the mileage I do its getting filthy.

Here's Aston's "how to" on keeping your Audi A6 clean this winter:

Had a clattering noise coming from the engine bay of thd Audi this week. Was enough to scare me to stop using it, as the sound appeared to be one of the fan belt pulleys.

The Kings Lynn VW centre checked the car today, and reported that some pulley component (have have not the foggiest what they said it was called) was shaking itself to pieces. Fitted its around a £360 bill.

Then I also mentioned thd gearbox oil again. Was told yes that would be OK, and would be around £170.

So should have s healthier Audi soon - although I have noticed it cranks for longer before starting in the cold, so I am thinking a new battery might be a good idea too.

I picked the Audi up last night, and all work is done. It needed two types of pulley; one for the alternator, and I forget what they called the other one. Then it's had a new Auxiliary belt too.

It has also had all new glowplugs, I mentioned to them it had sometimes been slow to start. I was pleased that it started immediately this morning, so that's obviously what was needed.

Lastly it has had a gearbox oil change, no noticeable difference to me... but at least that's some important maintenance done.

The bill was a painful £639.84, but at least that's got the Audi straight again!

Annoyingly, I also mentioned the temperature was not always getting to where it should be, but they seem to have missed that. I guess at least it's something I can get Aston to do!

Could you let me know is you find the temp issue as mine has started doing that and it’s doing my head in. Wondering if it might be a sticky thermostat.

I would imagine its the Thermostat - that's what it was on the Daimler.

If I do it I'll post a video of how its done if it works.

Seems like a good time to update the old "to do" list:

  • New battery DONE 21-12-2020
[*]Repair crash damage at rear passenger quarter, repair rust on all four arches and sills DONE
[*]Replace missing rear passenger side reflector (LNC5022AB) DONE
[*]Thoroughly clean the car, inside and out. - DONE (But always ongoing)
  • Assess any remedial work to the paintwork (including pinstripes/overspray); then add plan to address using wet-sanding/compounding etc. Mostly done, but there are still areas that need attention.
[*]Re-colour the armrest, and front seats where necessary. DONE.
[*]Fit missing wheel nut, then assess if any new tyres needed, spare is definitely needed! DONE - Replaced both rears, but front tyres are starting to crack with age so need replacement soon
  • Re-spray of front bumper.
  • Fit front parking sensors (yes I know I am a pansy)
  • Re-spray of rear bumper... as it was not done properly on the last body shop visit, maybe one day...
[*]Adjust rear bumper side profile to line up properly with wing. DONE
[*]Assess if front sill plates can be re-fitted; fit if possible DONE brand new sill plates fitted
  • Re-fit the jacking point cover.
  • Purchase LNF7361AA rear parking sensor bracket, paint it, and then re-fit parking sensor. Fitted but needs painting.
  • Adjust position of wonky parking sensors, re-paint those which need it. Adjusted, but paint needed to make perfect.
  • Check height of exhausts, or is bumper wonky between exhausts? Investigate.
[*]Re-fit the chrome trim at drivers side front sill. DONE
  • Have rust attended to (by new bodyshop) on corners of passenger side doors.
  • Have rust attended to (by new bodyshop) on front side, of drivers side front arch (where it meets bumper).
  • Wire in some USB charging points and fit under armrest.

  • Re lacquer all wood trim (as it is faded and cracked in places)
  • New gear knob (mine is faded)
  • Thoroughly clean engine bay.
  • Have gearbox oil changed.
[*]Repair faulty drivers seat, backrest motor not working DONE 04-05-2020 was control module
[*]Replace corroded subframe brackets for MOT DONE 23-04-2020
[*]Welding of underside for MOT DONE 23-04-2020
[*]Investigate "Check engine" light, suspected coil packs DONE replaced all spark plugs and coil packs
[*]Purchase and fit missing under-bonnet tool kit. DONE 09-06-2020
[*]Purchase set of original lambswool mats DONE
  • Attend to "knocking" in suspension at front (think it is strut tops)
  • Investigate lack of heating in cabin (suspected alarm siren blown fuse)
  • Inspect top timing chain tensioners, and replace if necessary
  • Rear seats are not moving, none of the buttons work - including the seat heaters
  • Several bulbs are required to get all the dials and buttons lit up
...I think that's everything, might be interesting to tally it all up and see how much Aston's Daimler owes me!

There is also a video on the way, as we changed the spark plugs and coil packs last weekend. It's running much nicer now, and the "Restricted performance" message is gone.

Good morning all, small update for everyone.

Sadly we had to take Aston to hospital at midnight on Monday, as he was not well, and had a temperature. He's been kept in hospital, and my wife Lindsey has been living in an isolation room with Aston, while staff administer anti-biotics to him, and analyse blood samples. I've still been at work, but luckily have been able to visit each night; I am lucky because generally visitors are not allowed in hospital at the moment.

I have previously neglected to mention that we have another pest on the way too, as Lindsey is 10 months pregnant; due on 21st February 2021. So Aston has been keeping Lindsey on her toes, as it's hard to keep a bored 2 year old amused when he can't leave a small room, particularly when you have a giant belly full with another small monkey wanting to get out of his own cocoon (yes its another little boy, and no I've not bought him his own car yet).

Unfortunately the hospital have told us Aston's Hickman line (the pipes that are temporarily sewn into Astons chest for the 3.5 years of treatment to administer medicine into his bloodstream) have become infected internally. So he is on a course of intensive anti-biotics now. Rather pesky timing to say the least...

But the worst part is Aston now has to stay in hospital for 10 more days to see out the course of antibiotics, which are given by machine 3 times a day and take 2 or 3 hours each... looks like our Christmas will have to be delayed until January.

So there might be a delay on the next update...

But anyway, keeping positive and looking to the future - Happy Christmas everyone! - Looking forward to Aston being better for a fun filled 2021!
