Hello all,

I have a 2016 Avant with the power tailgate, which i love, except it automatically closes before I'm finished loading/unloading. If a door is closed, the tailgate closes, if i walk away to pick something up, the tailgate closes, if i load some shopping into the back, the tailgate closes. On my head.
You get the picture. Is there a way to make it stay open?
TIA

Is there some setting you’ve triggered for it to auto close as a security feature? A bit like the auto lock after 20 seconds?

Hello Buck,
Thanks for your reply. I don't know, it's a 2016 car which I've had about 8 months and it's done it since i bought it. I can't find any mention in the owners manual. I only seem to have two ways of opening the tailgate, the button on the remote and the button inside the driver's door, if there's a catch under the tailgate lid, it doesn't seem to work.

Sorry, I missed your reply. Try this

1. Open tailgate
2. Push it up to the highest height manually with your hands
3. Press and hold the close button on the tailgate until you hear the confirmation tone.

It might just need a reset. The button just above the number plate should unlock the tailgate then open it. If that’s not working there may be a broken wire or faulty switch which is causing your issues.

If you feel confident, have a go at removing the rear trim to take a look.

PS. When was the car registered ? Is it a B9 model?

Hey Buck,
Yes, it's a 2016 Avant Ultra 2.0tdi Stronic.
I've just done the reset, heard the confirmatory noise, so I'll see if that makes any difference.
The switch under the number plate just seems dead, there is no feeling of a click or any reaction to it being pressed at any time. I wasn't even sure it was a way to open the tailgate at first, with there being two other methods, the key and the switch inside the driver's door. I'm not mechanically minded so i think I'll just mention the switch to the mechanic at my next service.
Thanks for your help and advice.

There’s no auto close function that I’m aware of, do you have the comfort pack? Just wondering if the kick switch is accidentally being triggered or has gone bad.
It should never close on its own, even if you walk away

Hi Pork,
I don't know if I've got the "comfort pack" is there a way to tell?
The tailgate closes if a door is closed, i assumed this was so that you couldn't drive away with it open. It also closes sometimes when I'm loading things into the back, which could be me triggering the kick function. Also, it seems to be on a timer, so that I've been away from the car fetching something else to put in the back and i see it close on it's own.
Me and Buck have come to the conclusion that the rear latch near the number plate is broken, could this be relevant ?

If the doors lock/unlock when you grab the door handle then it’s got it, try placing your hand over the small recess on the outside of the drivers door handle - it should lock.
Im pretty sure that the outside boot button will not close the tailgate, only the inside button does that so I think the problem may be deeper than just the outside button being at fault. Incidentally, my outside tailgate button does not have a notable click to its operation.
Does it beep all the way down when it closes? Any remotely operated close (I.e. one that wasn’t trigger by you pressing the button on the bottom inside of the tailgate) results in a beep beep until the tailgate is closed on mine.

Did you manage to sort this problem out?! I’m having the same issue. It’s a nightmare

Did you resolve this issue. I’m having the same problem and Audi want a fortune to fix even though they don’t know the fault with it !

I had the same issue exactly has you all described yours . The problem with mine was in the handle.

Inside the handle there's a plastic hinge that's where you press to touch the opening switch. And my hinge was broken on one side and was loose on that side. So i still don't know why but just that made the tailgate open and close when he wanted.

I took the handle off, opened the handle by the clips (take some care because they are hard and easy to brake) and grinded a little bit where the hinge was broken. With hot glue (i'm not sure how to say it it English, but is those plastic sticks that melt on the gun) i created a new hinge so that the plastic handle could stay on the same place and just do the click when i wanted.

OR... you can open your handle and if the problem is something broken inside, buy a new one!!!!
