What’s the difference between the two?
I presume on of them gives the USB connection and then I can just plug in my normal lightening cable?
Thanks

Niether of those are the modern lightning connectors - I posted the one you need above.

One of those is a 30 pin Apple socket which stopped being used on the Iphone 4!, and one is a USB to MMI, which could be used with a USB to lightning cable if needed.

I’m afraid I don’t know the exact differences between the two cable sets, although I would assume you can use either USB cable to connect your normal lightning cable, however, here are the part numbers of each cable in each set, which I hope may help you check compatibility:-

Set 4F0 051 510 P:
AMI to USB cable 4F0 051 510 Q (black collar at AMI connector)
AMI to 30-pin iPod cable 4F0 051 510 K (blue collar at AMI connector)

Set 4F0 051 510 S:
AMI to USB cable 4F0 051 510 AB (black collar at AMI connector)
AMI to 30-pin iPod cable 4F0 051 510 R (red collar at AMI connector)

For PFL cars with AMI:
4F0 051 510 AM includes the yellow collar lightning cable (4F0 051 510 AL) and a separate female USB to AMI (4F0 051 510 AB).

If you have a iPhone Max/XR then do double check it will fit under the armrest as the genuine Audi adapter is chunky and adds a good inch to the length of the phone.

I have a new one still in the sealed bag which I’ll put in the classifieds if you are interested.

Avoid the green collar lightning cable as it was superseded fairly quickly.

So I bought the OEM AMI to USB adapter and plugged my lightening cable into that, but it doesn’t allow me to use the AMI only through Bluetooth. Is there any difference in the way they operate from hardwired to Bluetooth?

Bluetooth is heavily compressed, sounds pony. I linked the correct cable above, however on a MIB1 it seldom does much anyway other than sends the music you are playinh.

You can't control the streaming service, you can skip songs with the wheel button and occasionally you will get some picture art, but Apple Music will take control after the album finishes or pauses and hijacks it and you have to re-plug it all in and start again, thus negating any hands free usage.

Basically its a PITA and one of the reasons I moved from MIB1 to 2. Its old technology, bare in mind it came out in 2012.

I think I've an AMI interface cable at home - used it for an iPod in my B8.5, if you're still in the market for one.

it’s defo tempting me to move to MIB2. Just need a parts list then will get looking.

Parts list has been posted many times, I've done it a few times, search engine will retrieve it.

Bare in mind even with MIB2, you dont get full control over streaming, there is NO search function on Tidal or Qobuz through the MMI, its pretty basic. Spotify MAY have a search function (i've never used it as of the low-res quality). But you do get Carplay, Waze etc and the graphics are quicker and more modern.

what are you expecting it to do?
Well I was under the impression, judging by other people’s posts and comments, that it had a better interface and connection with the screen (like album artwork etc). But it’s exactly the same!

There are limitations on album artwork size, especially on MIB1 STD (ie non tech pack).

Six years or so ago, artwork was often 400x400 or 500x500. These days it can be 1600x1600 which is too big for the MMI to handle, not only in terms of dimensions but also file size.

Do a search using the term artwork and looking at the threads from that time you’ll see the full story. As I recall, artwork was more reliable from an SD card than phone.

As above really.

The lead dosen't change interface, it just carried more information so was able to present things like artwork, if all the parametres were met correctly, like resolution (mentioned above). The 2011 designed MIB1 was already outdated at the time, ten years later and with the advancements in phones and the changing of coding, it is becoming pretty archaic. Especially non-tech pack versions.

It also depends on source. If you are streaming, from say Tidal or similar, I only occasionally got artwork, but then it's incredibly convoluted the way if you lost signal, Apple Music would 'hijack' the process (and you couldnt do anything other than track skip through the MMI controls/steering wheel). This can't be stopped on an Iphone. Android I have no idea about.

SD card artwork was ok, but still problematic. In fact, even on MIB2 artwork dosent always come up for me even when installed in the folder in the correct size etc unless you have Audi Connect for Gracenote. I've given up worrying about it now and accepted it is just old fashioned, and it won't ever change!
