Am a huge fan of the Audi A3, have been since the very start of its production. Had a 2009 and a 2010 8P Cabrio, progressing to the 8V platform in the shape of a Pre-Facelift Saloon in 2014 and then to a FaceLift Saloon in 2017. As you can see I normally change my cars every 2 to 3 years however the 2017 Audi A3 8V 2.0TFSI Black Edition Quattro Saloon is hands down the best car I have ever owned so held on to it a little longer than normal, too long actually as its value started to dive :(

I loved how this thing looked and drove, the interior is best in class and while it was no S3 the MTM Stage 1 put it close! As you can see I completed a number of modifications from trim through to suspension, not to mention coding and OEM retrofits :)

When the new 8Y platform was announced I started to get myself ready for the migration however my plans changed fast once images of the new vehicle started popping up on the internet. Its no secrete that I never liked 8V Sportback or 3DR cars, to me they just looked like fat A1's so I knew that I was never going to get on with the first images of the new car but then I saw the 8Y Saloon. While I still dislike the Sportback styling the Saloon images kinda looked ok...... until I saw the interiors! I work with a lot of the new platform vehicles, ie the new Q3 and RSQ3, so kinda knew what was coming but I honestly never imagined that Audi would fail so big on the new A3 interior, and as a result I started to look elsewhere within the brand.

The past few days you might have seen that parts from the above vehicle have started to pop up in for sale threads. Its been a busy few days but my loved A3 was indeed returned to stock in preparation for sale.

The above photo was taken this morning just before I set off to Audi to collect some new wheels having been made a deal I could not refuse on a vehicle they had actually forgotten they had, it still had the factory wrap when I got there!

So what did I go for given that I think the new A3 is a big FAIL design wise? While I work on all VAG vehicles the MQB platform has been my business standard for many years now. For those not aware I am VAG Car Coding ™ Limited and I performed many retrofit and coding firsts on this platform. I normally buy a car, pull it to bits, reverse engineer it and then put it back together in order to learn everything needed..... and that's exactly what I am going to do with this 2020 MLBevoII car!

Am still very much gonna be on the A3 forums but will be posting my build over in the Q5 forum and on my social media: @vagcarcoding and @alex_sq5b9

Initial thoughts on the vehicle? Love it. Maybe because its very different to my norm but time will tell I guess. All I know for sure is that while waiting for the plates to be installed on the SQ5 I looked in to a new S3 a laughed. What the hell were you thinking Audi? :(

Nice one Alex, I remember when I came down with my 2018 Q5 a couple years ago, you had suggested then a SQ5 could be on the cards next

Completely agree on 8Y interior, not to mention the fact (at the moment) that to get Mag ride, or upgraded VC and a few other options escape memory at the mo, you HAVE to go Vorsprung on the S3!

Lovely new car I’ve always liked the SQ5. I was in the same boat, I had a FL S3 and got a great offer to sell it just after lockdown and with the new 8Y A3 being announced it sounded like a great time to part ways.

Looked at various new cars but decided on a fully spec’d petrol S5 instead, build quality is night and day compared to the new A3, Audi have gone downhill massively with the next gen A3 apart from some fancy new tech with new Virtual Cockpit etc it’s very poor.

Great choice Alix.
I had my S3 saloon for over 4 years and to be fair it was a great car. Like you I noticed the market value was dropping. With that in mind and the fact I needed a larger vehicle I started looking at the alternatives. One of those being an SQ5 but after viewing a couple I decided it was just that little too big. I settled in the end on a Cupra Ateca. A performance suv is the way to go I think.:icon thumright:

As you know Alex I’m in the same mind as you re: the 8Y interior.
That SQ5 is spot on though.

New SQ5 looks the biz! New A3 really does seem to be an odd direction to be going in. I'm sure there's people that like it, not to my personal tastes however.

Was your car that pretty much planted the seed :)

I cannot actually put my opinion on the new A3 in to words on the forum as the language filter would be working overtime. Hating the Vorsprung thing also. Am a believer of being am to spec what you want as long as you can pay for it, within reason. Matrix Lights on my A3 were an extra £900 I think. On the SQ they are only available on Vorsprung models now.

An S5 Sportback was gonna be my backup car. The more I work on the MLBevoII platform the more I like it, bar the switch to fingerprint magnet "fashion over function" touch screens :(

Nothing wrong with the Ateca, great cars especially in the Cupra dress :)

All the best with your new purchase Alex.
I agree with you on the 8v saloon. I have an RS3 saloon which has a few mods with more to come and I love it. I love the design cues both inside and out. I saw a new S3 at Belfast Audi a few days ago and I don't like it either inside or out. The model that you had was just right design wise. Anyway, good health with the new wheels and pls don't forget about us

A great choice of car, Alex :thumbs up:...........I’ve had a 2018 Q5 2.0 TFSI for the past three years, which I’ve really enjoyed though, as I decided it was time for a change before it lost too much depreciation, I sold it last week, and I’m collecting it’s replacement tomorrow......a nearly new 2020 model Macan S :greedy dollars::greedy dollars:......I can’t wait!! :icon thumright:

Thanks. I actually thought about the Macan, worked on a few now, but ultimately they are more than I wanted to stretch to. Fantastically solid car tho but a few too many buttons on the centre console lol

You’re right about the centre console button fest, Alex, but when you get to my age (67), it’s easier to see/feel which button you want to press, rather that looking for the correct LED screen lol

lol I know what you mean. Thats one of my issues with all these touch screen systems... they all assume that roads are dead flat with no holes or speed bumps. Trying to hit a specific location on a shiny glass screen while driving along a bumpy road is hard enough for a passenger let alone a driver. A hybrid jog wheel / touch screen system would have been perfect in my mind.

I invented a wrist shelf in my head, well sort of? I thought that they should have had something like that anyway, after having a go in my neighbours Tesla
