Water pump change with new timing belt ??

Hi :sm4:,

What are your views on whether to replace the water pump when you get the timing belt done ??

My 2015 A4 Allroad only has 33k miles on the clock and has been well looked after. I've been quoted £525 for a timing belt and water pump change by a reputable indie garage who I trust with my car. They say the price is so high due to a new OEM water pump.

I can understand changing a water pump on a high mileage car, but on a car with only 33k on the clock ?? I'm aware of the so called "false economy" of not getting it done, but I wondered how many didn't bother getting the water pump done, and how many had had water pump failures ??

Not had mine done yet, and it's a year older than yours and got 51k on the clock.

Belt looks fine though, tons of life left in it. Think you can leave it until 90k.

Not sure about the water pump, think that's at 60k

I'll hold out a bit

I've not heard of a time/mileage to replace water pump alone. Most folks usually do it at same time as cam belt kit. How much is a Water pump??

Do it, if the pump fails after a belt change it all has to come off again to change the water pump anyway. The water pump usually fails after a belt change if it's not replaced at the same time as the ''new'' belt places extra tension on the ''old'' pump bearings causing them to fail.

Yup agreed.

When I did our GTD timing belt I changed everything.

And if the old water pump does fail after the new belt has been fitted, there's a good chance it'll wreck the new belt at the same time.

They usually come as a kit anyway.
How much is the pump?

I believe the stealers say 10 years/100K miles .......:anchor:'s :haha:
 
I was only half listening when the garage mentioned the cost of a OEM water pump, as I was still picking myself up off the floor at the £525 for the full job :crying:.

I think he said £115 for the water pump.

I got the parts but didn’t do it myself lol.

I remember my mate who is a Audi master tech and did my one saying if it’s the new style electric water pump they are very expensive.

Contact Coverdale car parts on Facebook and Mike will get you a good price for all the parts.

It’s not that bad a price: I had the whole job done on a B5 2.8 quattro about fifteen years ago and it cost around £600 then.
 
Anyone had a water pump failure on a low mileage, 5 year old A4 ??

Thinking of the engineering and quality that goes into Audi cars, I just can't see a water pump failure being high on the list ??

I wonder if it's a trap we've all fallen into to generate more money for garages and Audi ?? :smirk:

Hold on there, you have an Audi with a VW engine, and plenty of them have failed in Audis, so I would not be too trusting in this case, dig deeper and save some money.

Change it.
It's cheaper to do it now instead of down the line when it fails and possibly snaps the timing belt and wrecks the engine.
You spent a good bit on the car don't skimp on maintenance.

I was just politely asking people's opinions on whether it might be a bit of a con to generate more income for the garage, or whether they do actually fail on relatively new cars with lowish miles :sm4:

Age wears a car more than miles covered.
 
Change it.
False economy not to, whist they have it in bits.
Next belt change could be 50k away. Do you want to have to change your water pump half way there?

If you do it, then yes do both the timing belt and the water pump at the same time, I would.

But I think you can hold out a bit longer.

Most likely going to do mine early next year, sure it will last until then.

Not heard anything about these failing early on cars your age. But like everything it's a gamble.

If you want peace of mind then do it.

Also, depends on your driving style. If you are thrashing the car all the time, then the risk of failure goes up.

Yep, makes perfect sense to me, if people thrash and hammer they cars, then things are going to blow up.

I'm a bit late to the party, but would defo recommend getting the water pump changed at the same time. My B8.5 at the 5 year mark was off the mileage for the cambelt by quite a bit but the water pump started leaking slightly so had both replaced.

I knew the garage who did the work so they did it cheap for me, we ordered parts from TPS with trade discount. The camblet was £90.42 + VAT, water pump £30.19 + VAT, 2x coolant bottles £12.42 + VAT. They ain't the same as the ones Audi use but they are OEM.

£360 was amazing price for service inspection, oil change, brake fluid change and cam belt and water pump renew.


When you compare with the jokers at Audi its £595. Got quotes from 2 other's, Bosch indie was £463, another indie german specialist was £399. These were just renew cam belt and water pump prices.


Here the full work cost at Audi, hahaha or more ouch!

You say that the parts were from TPS, they will only sell genuine engine parts, ie genuine VW Group parts, these engines are fitted to Skoda, SEAT, VW and Audi - and for the same engine code, the parts are the same.

Ye good point, what I meant is some of the parts were branded "VW" rather than "Audi" - I think that's the only difference.
 
seat = skoda = vw = audi = porsche
just ascending prices.
As far as I've ever experienced any common parts will have the same part number and the same price, maybe some marques are giving parts discount for a specific period, but in the VW Group world the unit price gets associated with a part number. Where the cost runs away and up is where it is a specific Audi part or a specific Porsche part, so is never normally used on any other VW Group marque(s).
